this has been known for a long time and has been stated and restated...doesn't make much difference though .

This has been known for a long time, and we even spent a few weeks studying the effects in one of my classes.

Yes, video games heighten brain functions, specifically those pertaining to visual skills... But depending on the type of game, it can also have various other positive effects, such as quick, critical thinking, perseverence, and how to apply things you've learned in various ways.

Again, it really depends on the game - but as a whole, they do more good than bad, as far as actual brain functions go.

Violent media in general can constrain cognitive functions, such as memory (like, violent scene then commercial=poor viewer retention of commercial). At least temporarily. Playing Doom 3 for 5 hours isn't going to help your memory too much, but things like Tetris probably would.

Eh... the health benefits of gaming are most likely minimal, and the problems it causes far outweigh those - such as carpeltunnel.

Really, some of those health benefits could just as easily be applied to masturbation as well.

#1. They can improve your eyesight.

Staring at porn for hours could probably help do that too - but on the flip side, faping makes you go blind.

#2. They can help you focus.

Take away the porn and use your imagination.

#3. They can help you lose weight.

Obviously, and for some - it's their primary means of physical activity.

#4. They can help you understand classic literature.

There's a ton of classical porn litterature from throughout the ages, and by understanding what your ancestors faped to - you can better understand who they were as people.

#5. They can literally save your life.

AIDS.

So yeah... I wouldn't put too much stock in the idea that games are healthful for you (in general). If you want to get healthy see a trainer, a doctor or nutritionist.

I take it back, playing anything for 5 hours is probably going to put a dent in your eyesight.

I agree with Sinue, but can't think of a good way to say that I do.

>_>
You know...there are some studies that say something like men that look at breasts more often are at a lower risk of catching some sort of cancer.
Or something like that, I'unno.

those are little things that don't neccesarilly come from videogames. Other things do that too. actually, last year I did a report on how videogames are good and yaddayaddayadda. funny thing is, upon doing research it would of been WAY easier to do a report on the adverse effects of videogames.

Anything not done in moderation can be harmful.
oh counterclaim time http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

#1. They can improve your eyesight.
eh, can't really pick at that one.

#2. They can help you focus.
Some people say it can also cause slight a.d.d. focusing on one thing isn't that great. videogames let you have that focus becuase when you press the button something else immediatly happens. in real life, it's not as quick. it can cause people to become bored of other stuff that doesn't quickly satisfy them.
#3. They can help you lose weight.
lol? yes becuase playing the WII is better and more fun than playing real sports? please.

#4. They can help you understand classic literature.
So can actually reading some. Next.

actually lets play with a quote:
"Both Halo and the Aeneid tell a story about a more-than-human hero defeating enemies who would be too much for ordinary people like us - enemies who nevertheless bear an important resemblance to the ones we and the Romans face in our respective presents."

SO DOES EVERY OTHER FUCKING STORY. Plus I'm positive 15 year olds while playing "halo" aren't thinking to themselves.."wow It's like aeneid!"

#5. They can literally save your life.
so can playing operation http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif this, like #1 are known facts and the only thing this has going for videogames, aside from the fact that they're just fun.

Didn't even notice that article mentions University of Rochester. That's my school (kind of) yay!

Wait. Games don't improve your eyesight, from what the article says, but your ability to deal with space, topographies, and all those other nifty spatial things.

Is that a coin on the roof=> Hey are those my keys?
And:
Is that a coin on the roof=> Hey I can't see that sign because GAMES MADE ME BLIND.

Eyesight != visual skills

There's no doubt, that a lot of the mental training that can come from video games, can also come from other sources - the differences being apparent in availability, multiple types of training, and so on.

Pair that, with the whole thing about people learning better when they're enjoying themselves, and how invaluable games can be as a stress reliever, and you've got good product.

As for carpel tunnel... You'd think after almost 20 years of extensive video/computer game usage, and computer usage, I'd have developed some symptoms of that, by now. Yet, my hands work just fine. :/

I can only stand tetris for a short while >.> mostly because when I was younger it was playing tetris against my aunt or no gaming whatsoever during the summer for the most part.

as far as the benefits of gaming...there are lots of other articles out there that display the benefits, while someone said that it'd be easier to write a report on the negative effects...well most of that is propaganda. Such as the "Games cause ADD" well... games are used to help ADHD so it's not hard to see where the spin on info would come from. ADD and ADHD most likely come from all of our digital media and our amount of info we have been fed at very fast speeds over the last 20+ years and the fact that our school educational system are horrible and our parents are lazy fucks who either burn outs or up tight idiots that lack a decent education about anything modern and very little of the past.

The thing I find humorous is that every time someone not a gamer picks up one of my games to play quickly turn them off because there is too much reading...and here i thought I was being accused of not reading enough.

If a kid can sit and play a video game for hours on end...

...He doesn't have freaking ADD.

Yay. Another 5 more reason to play games... more.

hmm considering I do have ADD....you're wrong.

well most of that is propaganda.

and this isn't propaganda?

No mention of those Brain Age Academy games for the DS on there is a travesty, so mostly old research and news.

Kent
May 3, 2007, 08:24 PM
Well... The effects of Brain Age are a given, though. :/

I'm pretty sure that the intention of research is to reveal things that aren't blatantly obvious.

There was a study put out for millions of dollars to try and prove that videogames are worse than drugs! WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE!
