DC: PSO Not Starting?

I remember reading that PSO for DC can be played offline. But when I turn on my Dreamcast with PSO in, it loads the Dreamcast logo, the Sega logo, then goes to the console menu (play, system settings, etc).

My console is not connected to the internet, nor is it modded, and I'm not sure what version of PSO I have. I think it's v1, but since I've never gotten it to load, I'm not 100% sure.

So my questions are:

Do I need an internet connection for it to load?

If not, what else could be preventing my Dreamcast from loading the game?

I did some searching through the forums here and didn't find anything, but I apologize if this question has already been asked/answered.

You don't need a connection. There may be scratches on the disk.

There are a few scratches, since I got it used when I bought my Dreamcast. I'll try using one of those scratch removers and then clean it. Hopefully then it will work, 'cause I've never actually played PSO http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif
