This is nuts...

Cybrid Story (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml;jsessionid=LJFHXBBZMGC3PQFIQMGCFFOAVCBQ UIV0?xml=/news/2007/05/18/nembryo18.xml)
Church's responce (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/06/26/nchimera126.xml)

The gist of the matter: Scientists have found a way to bypass certain stem cell research bans by creating a creature that is both human and animal. Well, 99.9% human, .1% animal. It basically involves implanting an animal egg cell with a human cell to grow a clump of stem cells that aren't -quite- human, but close enough to use in our research. Originally legislature had been drafted to ban this research, but a provision was made to allow it under the condition that the embryo be terminated within 14 days.

However the Catholic Church is throwing a wrench in the works - claiming that since these chimeras/cybrids contain human cells - aborting them would constitute murder, and that the interspecies creatures should be allowed to grow to fruition as a normal human would.

Are we really prepared for the concequences of our actions? I mean, cat girls are cute in anime, but in reality...?

Oh, and lol @ the Cathaholic Church having a problem with this. You know, like anything else that involves the advancement of society.

Well it would certainly be interesting to see feral human hybrids in the world xD but i cant really see how they could lead a normal life. I mean could a a human with hooves or paws as hands really act normal? xP. No disrespect to anyone who is catholic, but i thought catholics believed that animals dont have souls? If we have human/animal hybrids how do they know they have souls? xD Lalwz this topic just made my day XP

Well there's quite a bit of embellishment on my part, you understand. We're still a long way off from real genetic hybrids. The Cybrid fetus would likely be completely indistinguishable from a run-of-the-mill human, though I'm not sure exactly what it would look like even if were proven able to mature without self terminating or being in some form mentally or physically handicapped. We're talking about a .1% difference - and there's no telling if the animal DNA would even be incorperated into the stem cells as they developed. Then again, the difference between humans and chimps is around 1.5 to 4%.

Everyone will bash the idea to the bone.

Then in a few decades, chimera-people and genetically modified humans will have fought for their rights, just like the Africans, just like the women, just like the homosexuals, and become part of daily life and society despite all attempts at hate and calling them weird.

The world is pretty well-made!

I can hear the furries clamouring already...

WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE?!

You have to think of the results..if only a few of those hybrids are made, and they have some significant difference, then they would most likely feel alienated and most likely treated like the typical minority.

And Sinue's post not very long ago about those Gundam-artist based robots that have already started walking upright and doing simple tasks.

So when's the colony going up? And photon weapons, when do we get those?!

The example shown is of a cow, so cow-girls, not newmans and cat-girls. Ahem. Have fun with that.

Frankly if they let them live with their .1% Animal, it will be many many many generations before we even start to see a difference in people.

Colony is already up, and we're planning on building a moon base.

And as for Photon weapons...

Well, lasers are made of photons...

Also, when we're done playing Laser Tag on the ISS, they're already working on the next form exterme sport. Space Diving (http://www.popsci.com/popsci/aviationspace/3c082d2daa463110vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html).

This is actually kind of funny that the Catholic church is defending it, albiet in an overall unintentional way. Still, hybrid animals tend to be sterile so, even if they survived and lived they might just be a single generation lost to time in the end. And who knows how the DNA would end up holding up and whether the animal and human DNA would combine, whether it would just be dormant, or whether they would have some genetic issues. And, for that matter, the stem cells might be different enough to not be 100% effective substitutes.

Anyway, this issue is going to continue to come up in the future in some form or another. The social and biological issues raised will be fiery with controversy and somehow I doubt they'll ever get solved. Creating a new, not to mention sapient, species is a huge moral dilemma, especially if all members of said species are in turn sterile. The problem in the end though is that nobody can say for sure exactly what the health effects would be on a hybrid human until after one had been created. And the question isn't so much if, but when and how that will come about. And depending on the factors it could either go over reasonably well, or be demonized by all from day one leaving the people created from said experiments potentially devistated for their lives.
