View Full Version : Sony says 'no' to PS3 price cut rumors

"At present we have no plans," Chubachi told Reuters when asked whether Sony had any plans to cut the PS3 price.

Sony has packed cutting-edge technology such as a Blu-ray high-definition optical disc player into the PS3, driving up production costs and making its retail price more than twice as expensive as the Wii.

The higher price tag and lack of attractive software titles have been cited as main reasons the PS3 has been trailing the Wii in sales, and analysts have been widely expecting Sony to soon slash the price to spur on demand.

Sony also said they they were going to have Dual HDMI.
MS said that the 360 failures were within normal limits for consumer electronics.
Nintendo said...well they pretty much delivered AFAIK. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Anyway, my point is that people just cant be trusted in this business. PR people will say what they have to in order to generate more revenue for their company, whatever that may be.

Following up on the report that the PLAYSTATION 3 would see a $100 price cut taking place the week after E3 2007, GameDaily has confirmed with "a merchandising manager at one of the world's biggest retailers" that the 60 GB version of the PS3 will indeed drop to $499, starting on July 12, one day after Sony's E3 press conference. GameDaily also reports that the new price is indeed indicative a retail-wide price drop, not a Circuit City specific sale, as a handful of speculators have posited.

If there is a price drop, $499 is still too much. I have no idea why MS decided to price the elite at that much either. They should have eradicated the core system, dropped the premium to $299 and then sold the elite at $399. Though I still wouldn't buy one at that price.

The only reason why I got the premium X360 now is because I kinda scammed it and got it for free. Otherwise, $299 is my absolute limit.

I put the date in bold text for a reason. I'd imagine that their stating this today is partly a response to the slew of articles from yesterday. Sure, it might still happen, but that could come across as yet another situation where Sony's right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. Then again, Sony has been known to lie about this sort of thing before as well. Still, either way they're losing masive money per console and dropping it by $100 just means more cost they have to eat. The final thing that makes this confusing is that Reuters talked with a named, real person while the article at GameDaily cites a "retail source" who "wished to remain anonymous". Either way, it's caused a lot of hype. If in fact though they do not have the cut, it could cause a lot of backlash even though it really isn't their fault.

The comments on that Kotaku article were quite entertaining.

At any rate, even $500 is too much money for a system which is currently failing miserably in the exclusive games department. I currently own an Xbox360, a Wii, and a Nintendo DS because they all provide a different (and fun) gaming experience. The PS3 hasn't done enough IMO to prove that it's capable of providing a better or even different overall gaming experience than the Xbox360.

No matter how they do it, by the time PS3's fairly priced, PS5 will be on the shelves for $2000 =

Now that the price drop is confirmed there are some crazy rumors going around about the rumble. Like for example in an interview with the development team for Haze the controller used to play Haze is being kept secret and blurred out. Some photoshop nerds are going crazy trying to enhance it so they can see if it looks any different. Funny stuff.

Alas, the Elite is that price as well, and the Premium 360 is cheaper still. But hey, I suppose you have to start somewhere.

What I find interesting is that Sony has no control over what goes on internally. They say "No price cut" and then two days later they drop it anyway.

It's all PR spin. Sony Japan said "no price cut", and technically they were right since the price drop only affects North America.

I'd be very surprised if Microsoft cut the price on its console before Halo 3 launches. What I do expect is that they'll phase out the Core system.

The Japanese PS3 is cheaper regardless.

With the current game selection, the PS3 isn't worth more than about $250 to me. The thing that really sucks about it is that really want to want one...just that Sony REFUSES to give me a reason. The novelty of buying a new system wears off pretty quickly and I don't want to be left with $500 worth of buyers remorse.

Well the US gets a $100.00 price cut. It's not great but as Obsidian Knight mentioned, I guess Sony had to start somewhere. I live in Europe so this has little to do with me. It is more then likely that there will also be a price cut over here as well, the big question is how much. Due to the exchange rate between the Euro and the Dollar, alot of European gamers felt that they got shafted ( by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo ) because we ended up paying more for our consoles than Japanese and US gamers. I don't think a 100.00 Euro price drop will be enough since the 60 GB PS3 is still going to cost more than 500.00 Euro. Sony needs to drop the price below the 500.00 mark.
