I don't even have an Xbox but I saw the trailer for Bomberman Live and it really does look awesome, how I wish I could play it..

Its fun, I love bomber man... Games modes consist of Classic, Arena settings, Zombie, and Paint Wars. Only a few stages so I'd keep an eye out for expansions for new battle stages

Mainly because it's freaking Bomberman. And you can play on Live.

is ranked tha only way to get more costumes?

No - you just have to be in a match with a time limit greater than one minute.

Costume pickups appear around the one minute mark (+/- 10 seconds or so), and you can get them in local games against computers.

However, to my knowledge, you have to both pick up the costume item and finish the game - it doesn't matter if you win or lose, as long as the game ends (i.e. no abrupt exiting).
