To all the people who say something like:
"If only Sonic Team had fixed the duping bug..."

Please learn to program something more complex than "Hello World" before you make comments like this.

Those who know how the duping bug is performed (unless there's a new one) should realize that it's ridiculously hard to perform, has great risks, and couldn't be prevented short of saving to your character file EVERY time you drop something (and noone wants that, that would make the game ridiculously slow and boring, not to mention more at risk of corruption through power outages and the like).

Really, it's impossible to prevent duping with client-side character storage, because at the very least, someone using a setup like Barubary has (routing their GC through their computer and using a program on the computer to hack the packets sent between the two) could do pretty much anything they wanted no matter what Sonic Team tried to do to stop them.

And even then, I've heard people eventually figured out how to dupe on Diablo II Realms... with server-side storage. So really, are there any online games that don't suffer from some form or another of cheating? Unfortunately, it's very difficult to patch or update console games (just look at JP ver 1.1 as an example), so there's no easy way to fix these bugs when they appear. And given the obscure nature of these bugs, they're probably better off not doing so.
