Well a simple noob question really.

What happens when you have a set equipped for

Equipping a Gigush with a Gigush Line adds an extra ATP 262, ATA 134 and DFP 29 to your stats.
The Gigush becomes a ATP 432, ATA 189 sword and the Gigush Line becomes a DFP 147 line shield when used together.

Do you have to be using the item or can it just be in your palette?

The stat bonus only applies when you're using the weapon with the armor, it's not across the board just because it's in your palette.
