Ah, I think you will have to at least create a partition for Ubuntu. There are tools for doing that on an existing setup safely.

Every OS has a boot manager, some better then others. Check what ubuntu comes with (LiLo etc). It shouldn't be a problem to set it up as dual boot at all.

The Ubuntu line (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu) come with GRUB. Which, when using it with my SATA system at least, is complete and utter shit. It works with my older IDE systems fine, but I've tried multiple times and multiple ways to install it only to get Error 15. I gave up on it as frankly I didn't even need the OS and just wanted to play around with it, not actually use it as a primary system.

The best way to have different OS's play nice with each other is to have different hard drives, not just partitions. Separate partitions work, but sometimes issues can arise and it's easier to simply wipe the disk rather than try and save a partition.
