Who'd have thought hand embroidery would be so soothing to learn. Originally, this was meant to be practice for mass making several of these as a way of giving my PSO friends birthday presents.

Both "wing" parts each took a couple of hours to embroider and you can tell where I started with this (The head/diamond part at the top) since the stitches are all... wonky. The body and tail part should have been the easiest part but I managed to squiff the edge somehow by rubbing out the chalk markings with my thumb/stowing it away in my bag without covering it. Whoops!

I've still got the purple border to do but that means I have to learn how to do a blanket stitch/buttonhole stitch all the way around the ID without taking it off the embroidery ring. I'd do it now but I'm out of purple thread and it's half two in the morning... So.. I'll have to wait until the store opens tomorrow, heh.

Turning the thing upside down, I can see a lot of mistakes in it but again, it's my first one and I did do most of it on the 40 minute train ride to lecture(s) everyday. If it wasn't illegal, I'd comission making these and I think I could get a whole section ID done in two or three days. This one's 4" in diameter though (about 10cm) and I don't plan on making anymore that are this big. Maybe around 3" since that's about the same size as most embroidered patches like the ones you get from the Guides or Scouts.

Update: Took off two pictures and added Redria and Bluefull Section IDs.

I really like it!
These are a great idea to do with embroidery. It's always wonderful to see interesting objects that people make as fan-stuff that's not just CG art. What are you planning to do with this when it is complete?

It shouldn't be illegal to make these. ST should do what "Snakes on a Plane" did and open up the rights on stuff like that. (Snakes on a Plane opened up the rights on CafePress, and everyone just went wild making loads of hilarious merchandise spoofing the slogan/logo/etc and selling it) After all, they're through with Sect. IDs/mags etc...It could only help the franchise if people went around making interesting things with it.

Still, this is a cool idea, especially if you wanted to build a cosplay. Though, things like pinkal/greenill/etc. might get rough with all the lines in them. (still, if it's relaxing and fun to make them, oh well, its all good)

That is *cool*. My HUnewearl was a Purplenum ^_^

I plan on sewing it onto my satchel and wearing it to college or wherever I go. I've got the threads picked out for every ID but the ones I'm really not looking forward to are the ones with lots and lots of curves. Straight lines I can deal with and sort of make them look symmetrical but curves are a bit harder when the fabric's not very traceable.

Still, that's what my table lamp, the glass from my photograph frame, my inkjet printer and my sharpened bit of chalk from the seaside (really ought to get a chalk pencil, this embnroidery smells of mussels...) is for!

As for the legalities, I checked up with a friend doing law that fan things like this is fine, IF you don't sell them. Trading them or giving them as gifts is fine but not in large quantities. So um... Who wants to trade their PSU items for a section ID? n.n;;;;;

Go ahead and sell small patches. These aren't trademarked, and over five years old. I once reported a t-shirt shop to SEGA, because they had the official artwork lifted from the PSO CD on stuff, and they never did anything.

when you wear that wherever you go, be careful, L&K14 COMBATs will start dropping randomly at your feet http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif

I finally learnt how to sew a constant button hole stitch/blanket stitch and finished the badge completely. It's four inches (102mm ish) in diameter and the edges shouldn't fray at this point.

At one point, I thought about filling in the black areas with black thread to reinforce the entire patch and to make it look a little bit more even but with some advice from a friend, I decided against it.

I'm planning to do more on a much smaller scale, something like three inches (76mm ish) because the edge took a LOT of thread to fill in. Hopefully, it'll take only one spool of thread this time instead of three! (Not like thread's expensive at £0.67 a spool but running right to the end of the spool on the train gets frustrasting when you've still got twenty minutes left to do something.)

I'll update once I get another Purplenum done then I'll work on the other IDs. (Still not looking forward to Bluefull and Pinkal)

That's totally sweet. If you make more, you could probably sell them at anime cons.

Hell yeah! I want a Purplenum patch like that. I, personally, would have made it on a blank boy scout patrol patch, but that is still kick ass! My main character Alex, on the GC is Purplenum. Whitill would be nice for BB Alex (as shown in my sig).

THank you all, my character's name's Alex too and I was rather disappointed that the Section ID calculator changed in Blue Burst but it's goo to know that it's a rather "easy" ID to do.

Do you really think it's okay to sell these? THey're all handmade so I wouldn't be able to mass produce them in a rush and they were only intended to be presents to my friends whom were with me during PSO.

(Also in the pipeliines are SectionID pillows, bathroom rugs and normal rugs but one step at a time, right?)

Managed to finish both of these IDs in time for Christmas. I was right, it takes about twenty hours to complete each ID with the new size (three inches in diameter) but the hardest part isn't in the embroidery itself, it's finding the right lighting and managing to get the trace of the ID onto the cloth.

I've got dressmaker's tracing paper and washable liquid pen marker to further strengthen the lines. You may or may not be able to tell from the picture but the Bluefull badge is REALLY distorted as in, it's not totally even and round. I think this shows it better:

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g215/Biggabertha/Bluefull.jpg

Lastly, I'm most proud of the way I'm leveling up getting better with getting smoother and more even stitches than I did with the Purplenum ID. Less material's been used in both of these IDs; much less than that of my much larger Purplenum badge (but they still took more than 8m of six strand thread to embroider though).

I'm working on Viridia, Greennill and Skyly next but these three, I won't be able to get done for Christmas (not with Royal Mail's expected two week delivery estimates... x.x).

EDIT: On second glance, turning it upside down and looking at it from the photograph, maybe I Shouldn't have extended the bottom parts of the "blades" on the Bluefull ID.... I think it's too late to use a stitch ripper to repair the damage so I'll just have to leave it and hope that my friend will like it and won't mind that flaw.

EDIT2: Damnit, I just noticed the other flaws I have on the Redria, eneven and unsymmetrical down the middle... x.X Looks like I need some more practice...

Sweet! Personally, I'd ask you for a Purplenum one, but you do what you do. I'm not going to impress anything http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

they may not be perfect or symetrical, but considering no one else is doing it, it's not like you have any competition http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Seriously though, these are very nice, regardless of flaws in the work.

THank you everyone for your comments! (Bluefull and Redria seem to be really popular amongst many people I know..)

Please let me finish one of each ID before I consider doing some as requests here please. Every ID I've done so far (fifteen attempts at Purplenum, three attempts at Redria and one on Bluefull) has always made me learn something new, be it a way to keep the line straight, the stitches smooth and not overlapping or even a closer weave. Hopefully, after I've finished the last ID, I'll have gained enough experience points to do this on a much better and higher quality as special requests.

THank you for your patience.

Those are really nice- never seen anything like this, so its good to see something new. I'm pretty sure we played way back on PSOGC- I know I played with an Alex and your username is familiar. I was a Skyly HUnewearl called Terra.

Anyway, good luck on the rest, I'd love to see a Viridia or Skyly one http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

n.n; Yeah, I helped you once on a Sealed J Sword on those Gi-Gues, I think it was Episode's 2 odd camera angle Endless Nightmare that I helped you with.

Anyway, I'm working on Viridia, Skyly and Greennill at the moment (not all at once but Skyly's my first priority, I think....). I do plan on making at least one of each before doing any requests at all. Just to build up some EXP sewing experience.

Oh! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif Heh, thought you were talking to me! My bad! I do play as a Purplenum HUmar named Alex on GC, but I never played online with it.
