My elder brother, Adam, is in the JET program; and I'm visiting him for Christmas.

I'll be there December 21st-January 3rd. Uber pumped.

After arriving in Tokyo, we'll stay there for three days, take the bullet train both to Fukushima, hang out at my Bro's apartment for a few days, then travel around the area. (Kendo in castles, hot springs, Christmas dinner with a Japanese family.)

Before we leave, we'll stay another three or so days in Tokyo. <3

Going to Akihabara? You have to go there. Pick up some rare games and music and maybe some crazy Japanese electronics that have no practical use other than laughs.

I've thought about JET myself. How has your brother enjoyed that? Or is he just starting?

We are totally planning making a run to Akihabara. :3

He enjoys JET just fine, this year is his first year. (Funny story, while he attended Purdue, he'd ride his unicycle all over the place. He took it to Japan for his transportation...

School Officials saw him riding it to work and said he can no longer ride it. XD)

Wasabi-flavored pocky? O_O Do they even have that flavor? >_>;;

I seriously wish I could go. I don't have the money or time for it, though http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif

Congrats on getting the chance to go to Japan. I know you will enjoy it.

I spent 5 weeks and 2 days in Japan and it was the greatest experience of my life.

From my own experience, I will give you some tips:
-See as many sights as you can possibly can
-Buy BAKERY melon pan. The melon pan that sells in convenience stores is fail.
-As much as I like the Ramen Shops that are everywhere, the Cup Ramen that is sold in supermarkets is really good. I am not sure what the exact name of it was, but I always bought an spicy hot flavor (the box was decorated with fire).
-Going to Asakusa is a must. You get a very good glimpse of japanese culture, without having to travel outside of Tokyo.
-Don't eat ANY American food. It doesn't matter if you don't like asian food much, you will deeply regret it if you do. (Although I did visit McDonalds for snacks. The shakes are 100yen and the salads are delicious).
-Buy food that is sold on the streets. It's a good taste of Japanese snacks.
-Be prepared for PACKED trains on weekends.
-Don't just take back anime/manga related souvenirs
-Be prepared for a vending machine around every corner(how do these make money?)
-Try not to dread the plane ride back home too much.
That's all I can think of at the moment

Heres some of my favorite pictures that I took.

I'll be Osaka. Best place for a black man to be in Japan. Tokyo, not so much..

HEL YEH! KANSAI ICHIBAN! Yeah, I really love the Kansai region of Japan, such as Osaka, Kyoto, etc. Osaka's where my girlfriend lives, and that was where I was planning to go if I was able to go there during the winter vacation.

Akihabara's pretty useful, if you have the time though, the Nakano Broadway is basically a multilevel mall of geekiness.

Always be on the lookout for small items as well, and be prepared to do a lot of digging through assortment bins. Great source of cheap trinkets that'd otherwise be completely awesome over here, such as figurines of series you'd never think there to be figurines of, and stockpiles of older foreign game systems.

Yeah, I really loved Kyoto, which was where I stayed most of the time, and it became something of a home to me when I was there. As for Akiba, which is the place where every American otaku wants to go, yeah, I've been there too, but, meh. I liked Osaka's Denden town

Oh ho Kamica, is that the waterfall in Niko? It's an absolutely gorgeous place! Tokyo is fantastic as well, and if you go to Osaka, make sure you go on the hep 5 ferris wheel (at night preferably), such a spectacular view! But in general, it's a fantastic country. The 11.5 hour plane journey from London wasn't fun but it's totally worth it.

I'd love to go back again, preferably when I have slightly better command of the language, it did get pretty frustrating at times.

Going to Japan, you ought to try a rice burger!!!

Its low fat, low cholesterol, much better than your average hamburger. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Yeah, that is Nikko. It was definitely an amazing place. The garden picture that I posted was also at Nikko. Pictures do not do it justice, it was the most beautiful thing I ever saw. I even went to a hotel that had a hot spring. They had a hose for people like me who can't stand the heat.

I didn't spend that much time in Tokyo and I didn't see much when I went, but I don't mind. I visited many various cities and places outside of Tokyo. Not many people get to travel outside of Tokyo, so I was given a chance to see many rare places. But yeah, Tokyo is nice and Akihabara is as amazing as people hype it up to be.

I shall ask my brother to make sure we go to Nikko. :3
