Just in time for the release of Ambition of the Illuminus, PSO World is happy to re-release another feature: The PSOW Cam!

http://www.pso-world.com/downloads/cam/sm_cam_pc.jpg
http://www.pso-world.com/downloads/cam/sm_cam.jpg
Click here for the full images (http://www.pso-world.com/cam.php)

Now running in (S-Video) wide screen, the psowcam will be showing up in random areas of PSU. It will also be running on the PC version of PSU, as well!

It is on a dedicated computer set to take a snapshot about every 30 seconds. It should be on pretty much 24/7, network permitting. Also, if you have any creative ideas to do with the cam, please post here or PM me!

As always, please do not abuse the cam, or we will take it down.

Huh... I was looking at it before, but it was always down. Might have to look at this more often XD Not that it matters to me.

It's just intended to be a fun little feature of the site. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif And yes, it was down since December 17, I believe. At that time, I simply ran out of funding for the cam. Like before, all the time and money spent on the website comes from our own pockets.

We've had ideas come up with the cam to do with the community. We'll see what ideas our users come up with and things that they would like to see.

I've sent you a message. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

The camera now has a live thumbnail, and is back online. I'm not sure what caused it to go offline for the last few hours, but I have edited a few things so that problem shouldn't happen again.

Heh, I saw this camera sitting in Uni 2 a couple of days ago and was wondering if it was a joke or not. Guess that answers that.

By the way, what's your video capture setup? Been looking for something that could do widescreen for a while now.

This might be a stupid question, but:

Will it always be in Uni 2? Or is it always random?

I'm glad you asked. I kinda wanted to reveal the information behind how I set this cam up. I'll post the details in a post tomorrow, deal? Pictures and all. I'll tell you right now that I use the Pinnacle DVC 100, which uses USB 2.0 (which is really important, or else the capture looks really bad!)

However, I'd suggest looking on Newegg (http://www.newegg.com), probably for a PCI card. They tend to be more reliable and clear for images. (keep in mind that the psowcam uses about 10-20% compression in the images it uploads, so really, the DVC100 isn't THAT bad.)

Ooo... I had seen this before, and had wondered if it was legit, or not... Sorry if I annoyed you....Eh, nothing really can bother the cam. We're just not responsible for what people say and do on the cam. Generally, if something big happens, I'll disable the cam for a while and blacklist the people.

As for mail and friend requests, I turned off notifications in Xbox Live. I can't block people from sending mail, cards and party invites, but they're really not that big of a deal. (I'm personally glad that they changed this from PSO... people would send cards with profane names and all back in the day, and it would show up)

It'll generally stay in the lobbies where it's most populated or interesting, and I'll try to keep it on Universe 1.

You can save pictures to your PC and now upload them to the pic thread. This should be better when AoI is released, when psowcam can sit and be in First Person mode. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Glad to hear the response!

Thanks for the information, Rachiid. I wasn't sure if Universe 15 was still considered the PSOW server due to lack of people showing up. I'll stop by sometime, and we'll see what happens.

Theres also certain ones, like Uni 7 is the Guild Uni. I'd stay away from that one, things could get ugly.

Sorry about the typo Rashiid. ;P

Anyhow, I will probably stick to Universe 1 for the time being, and hop on the 15th Universe when AoI is released.

As an update for the PSU PC psowcam, you can look for one coming very soon. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Last but not least, I will post the info on how the server was made hopefully tomorrow - the programmer is adding a feature to the program, and I'd like to post it in it's newest form. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Quality is good, but real-time recording is better, so PCI won't cut it http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif Besides, fifty bones isn't a bad deal at all.

Yeah, just make sure you have the most recent software for it. It does come with software, and it works well - Just make sure you get the updates from the website and have the minimum specs. Keep in mind the cam server runs well under the minimum specs. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

We're in the process of adding a PC cam. If you can think back to when psowcam was running on both Gamecube and Xbox, it will be similar to that.

We hope to have it live sometime in the next day. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

The info about the server should be posted later today for those of you interested. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

It's on its way. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Since I've gotten a few requests for this in the past, I thought I'd share how I set the cam server up, along with some interesting facts about it.

http://www.getintothegame.net/upload/uploads/IMG_2460.JPG

Here it is. It's an old 2001 Compaq Presario, and it runs not only a video caputure program, it also runs PSU PC. Here are the specs:

OS: Windows XP Professional
CPU: Intel Celeron, MMX, ~490MHz
Memory: 256MB RAM
Video: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000
PCI Card: USB 2.0 (5 Port)

As you can tell, this computer is OLD - running very old hardware, but still doing a very nice job simply capturing video.

http://www.getintothegame.net/upload/uploads/IMG_2461.JPG

I use a Dazzle DVC100 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814144705). For input, I use a universal S-Video cable (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=801341) to connect the Xbox 360 to the computer, and it provides a fairly nice picture. The only problem with this is that it uses interlaced video, which is why you sometimes see lines in a capture. (Here's a good explanation of interlaced video (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlace))

After the drivers are installed, I use a program called SCWebCam (http://www.harmlesslion.com/cgi-bin/showprog.cgi?search=SCWebCam), a program which has proved incredibly useful. The thing is, the program is great as it is, and if you need anything, just ask on the forums - the programmer will help out as best as he can. One of the most helpful people I've met!

Once all this is done, all that is left is to set up the program, which is incredibly easy. Select your capture sources, video and desktop, log onto the PSU servers and go to where you want to cam, then start uploading to FTP - that's all!

Umm... I think it'd be a cool Idea just to have it running in the club when we have these "meet and greets"... I don't know if having the camera somewhere it'll be known is a good idea though... And you know it'll be swamped... It may decrease the amount of pics you can take... But hey it's an idea...

That is the idea. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif How it's planned to work is that the cam will be in the busy areas of PSU, where it'll continue capturing. When there are meet ups on PSOW, or events on the server in general, the cam will try to be where the action is.

On thing I'll have to do in the near future is do some runs to the sub-lobbies, so I can use the transport feature. We'll be moving the cameras out of the Guardian's Colony sometime this week to another lobby.

Mostly, it's a tip of the hat to the original psowcam done by Lollipop and Saladwood. They were the big admins at the time, and originally came up with this idea.

Just as a brief note, both cams were upgraded to AoI today. (Sorry about the typo in the cam from the other day, I meant they'd be upgraded on the 24th. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif) However, the PC AoI cam is going through a hard time, for some reason, even after reinstalling Direct X 9c, it will not initialize. Gameguard won't even start... hm. It's odd! Hope to have this fixed very soon.

Also, some minor details have been changed to improve both cameras.

EDIT: Uninstalling the first one I tried, then reinstalling the game in another directory seems to have fixed my problem.

Both cams are now live! Enjoy. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I'd also like to thank Sryche from PC PSU for bringing me to the casino. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I'm bumping this up just to let everyone know that the psowcam server has been replaced. It is now running on a much better computer.

Hopefully this will fix the cam problems we've been having!

I'd also like to note that the 360 cam is currently unavailable due to smaller issues, it should be brought back tomorrow.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone.

UPDATE: As of 12:05 MST (Cam Time), the Xbox 360 cam is now back online. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

ANOTHER UPDATE: Ironically, I spoke too soon. Everything is down for some reason. I will be unable to diagnose whatever it until I get back to the server later tomorrow. I have no idea what's happened.

It appears that both PSU PC and Xbox were turned off. I have no idea how this happened, since they're not extremely easy to exit out of... It will be interesting to look into.

FINAL UPDATE: There was a power issue, the problem has been resolved and the cam is back running. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
