View Full Version : The really hard/epic games thread

So i recently bought CoD4, i got it for the multiplayer, but obviously wanted to play the single player too, looking at the achievements i saw you got most for completing levels on veteran so foolishly i hopped straight into veteran mode.

wow. this game is tough, it's carnage the fights are epic, bullets and screaming constantly. Veteran mode puts halo 3 legendary to shame. The thing is enemies have a habit of respawning forever, so you got to shoot qquickly and move forward which is very, very hard to do.

So I decided to make this thread so people can post the hardest games they have played, games that had you screaming at the television throwing a tantrum only to sulk for a while before giving it another shot.

Hard games = games that you can barely avoid a gameover after 2-3 minutes of gameplay
Epic games = games that come either in episodes or a series

Hard games =/= Epic Games

At first i was hesitant to put epic in there aswell. Yet they do actually fit - what i meant was those games that were so hard that they felt epic once you completed them. Epic the word is thrown around too much yet i want people to tell me those games they HATED for its difficulty yet felt AWESOME once you actually complete them

Halo 3 is almost impossible if you turn ALL of the skulls on, the purpose of the skulls is to offer a challenge beyond Legendary, like a secret customizable difficulty in itself.

I have yet to see anyone beat Halo 3 completely without turning any of the skulls off.

as for epic, Xenosaga trilogy is the most epic to me, well especially storywise. Xenogears is extremely epic too, and first time through it felt longer than Xenosaga 1-3 combined. but it's tough to compare cause both stories have their own great characters, stories, and plot.

But I feel Xenogears has the advantage cause it didn't need a sequel to tell it's whole story (well the story that's self contained), it didn't leave so many plot holes and secrets like Xenosaga episode 1. it didn't end abuptly. it was like Star Wars episode 1-6 in a single game. and even more so than that since I think I clocked over 80 hours on that game.

Xenogears is freaking epic. It makes Chrono Trigger seem like a brief time traveling tour. it makes Final Fantasy 7 seem like a story for pre-schoolers.

Oblivion is pretty epic too since its virtually endless and lots of things to do.

I know Mass Effect will be really epic also.

I think some of the hardest games around are teh Ghost and Goblins games, I hate those games, I never bother trying to finish them.

but back to Xeno, yeah, Xenogears and Xenosaga are the best of the best as far as epic but alas I just can't get enough of it. now if their worlds were only as huge, always true-to-scale, and massive like FF11 and even more so. but meh something can always be done better. they still rock.

Another one of the hard games would be Martian Gothic. Regardless of the name, it has nothing to do with gothic in any way, it is basically a cheap Biohazard clone. I only played it a few times. When the game begins, there is a long cutscene. When I finally get to move the main character around, I got a gameover under 3 minutes. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

I'm quite sure your talking about the sniper mission when your trying to escape and for 3 minutes you gotta wait for the chopper while literally all of Russia fucking descends on two snipers one being injured. Yeah, thats one of the best missions in any game ever. I came so close to breaking my controller many a times on that one part. In the end I had to take the cowards way out and hid behind the building and sniped from there. The difficulty of the game on Veteran difficulty is comparable to Ninja Gaiden, on Insane and definitely beats Halo on Legendary with all skulls on just because the AI is so much more advanced.

Then on Veteren Difficulty even something simple like taking "the shot" is WAY harder then any other difficulty. You have so much more wind to account for and the I originally beat the game on Hardened but have been going back through it on Veteran because its really such a class game.

Infinity Ward did a fucking amazing job with the whole game and my 2nd Favorite mission is the Marine mission where you start out manning the the gun on the chopper and later on around the end you get this black hawk down (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265086/) esque moment where you gotta go and save the pilot. Then the totally unexpected conclusion for that mission. Really, really, epic.

In fact the whole game feels epic, even though your in the perspective of just the soldier you really feel the gravity of the situation for which your fighting for. This game should be the standard by which all incoming tactical shooters should be graded by.

You forget that they are both subjective adjectives that depend on your own personal interpretation and experience on the subject. Epic is originally poetic terminology. I'm sure you may be familiar with the term poetic license. There is no exact rule for what word one can use to describe something so long as it conveys the message the writer is trying to articulate.

In this case he's just saying the games is really hard and grand. Or more suitable for the game "Deep and Hard" http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

DOOM on Nightmare difficulty is only hard if you stick around for the monsters to respawn. Speed is the key.

Mwabwetumba
Nov 15, 2007, 03:06 PM
Yeah, I'm aware of that speed is the key to clearing Nightmare, but some levels is clearly not meant to be possible to complete.. not that I complain, just gives me more incentive to try! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

For the record, I have yet to succeed in completing "Go 2 It" even on Ultra Violence.. blergh.

Edit: I should probably add that I never use the "Save" function and that I always start each level fresh with only the pistol. So I'm making it harder than it already is -.-

IMO a really hard/epic game are the overlooked types that is burdened with crappy controls and a terrible camera but has a good storyline. A game I have in mind is Dawn of Mana on Hard or Ultimate mode. The easiest boss fights get mediocre and hard at the same time when the boss cheap shots you with a weak attack. Try fighting Stroud and his darn ice attacks. XD

Epic: Fallout, Arcanum, Oblivion, Skies of Arcadia, pretty much any 4x game (Civilization, Space Empires, Galactic Civilizations), The Halo series (if taken as a whole), pretty much any of the normal Pokemon games.

Crazy Difficult: Some parts of KOTOR depending on build, Burnout 3 (some of those circuits took 30 minutes+), Psychonauts (control scheme... terrible), Strife

when i first looked at it, i thought that was a samurai riding a motorcycle. if that would be the case, i would have immediately bought that game as a kid.

and you're right, battle toads was a game you just can't beat. theres only so far you can go in it, i've never seen the ending.

but theres a major difference between difficult games and just plain frustratingly hard. "difficult" is when a game is hard, but if you find a system or method that works, you can manage to hold your own and beat it. for example, ninja gaiden for the xbox everyone says is so difficult. it was more about blocking, moving around while still blocking, and waiting for an opening to hit them with a combo and take it over. people will overlook how important blocking is when you're not attacking, or knowing a bad guy's attack patterns, and get overwhelmed. i too was one of the view that loved ninja gaiden and thought the difficulty was just right. well, everything was blockable except for those damn GHOST FISH near the last level. you couldn't avoid them.

now GHOST FISH is the definition of frustratingly hard. theres no real tactic to prevent yourself from getting hit. all you can do is get the nunchucks and pray that your swinging doesnt get interrupted so you can continue to attack. thats not even good tactical fighting, thats just pushing X repeatedly

But yeah, I'm gonna have to say that Ninja Gaiden is probably the hardest game I've ever played. I still haven't finished it yet. But that's due to the fact that my "old" original Xbox broke, back in the day, and I never got back to my original game save, which was on level 12.
