Not sure if anyone else here is a fan of this game, but this is one of my favorite mmos, I have been waiting patiently for this to come out in English,
so I was really excited to see this. Between this game, AION, and PSU...well...I hope I have a life outside gaming in 2008 lol.

Is anyone else excited for the release of English Mabinogi...I know I am ^-^

Never heard of it, but it looks interesting. I'll have to look into it some more, because just from what I've seen of the trailer so far it looks like a cross between Harvest Moon and True Fantasy Live Online. Is there a monthly fee, or is it free to play and make their money off of downloadable premium content?

Well, its free to play, but in order to become strong as a character, you need to "rebirth"

You start as a young child, and gain stat bonuses as you age. You can rebirth and start all over again...Thats the weirdest part of the game, the rebirthing part - a lot of people dont like it.
Mounts cost money (theres unicorns for instance)
as well...

The game has a beautiful atmosphere and the towns seem alive, you take tasks from people called arbeits...that come and go in game time. Extensive are the crafting options, and combat is strange but fun, it reminds me of a mix of action and strategy that is kind of in a class by itself.

I wish I could explain more about the game, I played a good while but this isnt the type of game you can get by easily with a limited knowledge of Japanese.

At the time it came out the graphics were amazing but its aged a bit, everything is cel shaded and has a pretty muted quality to it...lots of details...it still looks unique and fresh I think. As a whole the story, the towns, the quests, crafts etc make the world seem quite alive, which is the sign of a good game I guess. Hopefully it will be successful here =)

Oh, and to add, it did remind me of True Fantasy, it came out around the time that was cancelled which is how I got interested in it.

Another KMMO grindfest *yawn*

Looks pretty, but they're all Lineage/RO clones at heart, which saps all the fun out of it.

Hmmm...35 days from now? So that should be about the start of February, right? I'm gonna have to look into this, especially if only things like mounts (and maybe "rebirthing"? you didn't say) cost money. It looks really cute.

From that footage that you've shown, I'm fairly interested. I like the general atmosphere so far. Keep us updated, I might get in to this if I don't have to put too much effort in.

Go collect 100 bear uterus (oh, and they're a 10% drop)

The first handful of levels are free, but after that, it takes hours upon hours to even get one percent of your exp bar.

Banal gameplay that favors botting over actually, you know, playing the game.

Finally, and item WORTH hunting. Fuck Goldania, I'm gonna make Stephen Colbert proud.

And that's different than pretty much any other MMO out there.... how?

This shouldn't be as much of an issue considering we're on, well PSOworld and both PSO/PSU have that same broken textwrapping.

MMOs, where polishing turds to greater and greater shininess is preferred over innovation.

Maybe some people just like that kind of thing. And if you're going to picking between this turd or that (MMOs in general), you might as well chose the shiniest. Especially if it's free. Unlike a pay to play unpolished turd like, well... I'm sure you know where that's going.

Why are you defending an RPG that MOST LIKELY is going to turn out to be the same old shit anyway?
Knowing the way Korean MMOs are its going to be a helluva grind and take crazy amounts of min/maxing to get anywhere.

A good MMO has on-going content that drives the player to continue playing after reaching max lvl(which should'nt take an absurd amount of time, nor should it be mind numbing that you feel the need to bot through it); not merely say "ok, here's your stock world, now go lvl up until your brain tries to stab itself".

There are plenty of MMO's that offer the on-going world progression feel that you don't notice the grind, these are the gems. A good game is one you don't really realise you're putting effort into; because it's enjoyable and fun. You're driven by the fun you're having.

I'm just being argumentative. I have yet to played an MMO that I actually liked, so they're all equally shit to me. But as said, at least this one has the benefit of "looking perdy". That, and it's free for the most part. So it's worth a shot at least, and I see no reason to really bash it before I play it. Well, aside from bashing it just on principle because it's an MMO.

Yeah but all Korean MMOs are made to look pretty. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of graphical eye-porn in favor of gameplay that's both solid and addictive.

Yeah, I've tried them all.. a kind of morbid curiosity.

Honestly, when you've played one KMMO, any other you play gives you the strangest feeling of deja vu.

And yeah, Sinue, the state of MMOs is pretty dire. Games that dare to be different (take A Tale In The Desert) are 'niche' while everyone else tries to rip
off Lineage, RO or WoW.

Hm, Ive played many grindy games, and this one is different which is why I like it. The wiki link is pretty helpful if you need more info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mabinogi_(game)

As for rebirthing, yes, it costs money. I am hoping that rebirth and mounts will be cheap in the English version but I kind of doubt it.

Every game has a grind, I personally even found World of Warcraft kind of grindy. Dont get me started on games like Lineage 2 *blech*
To me what makes a game exciting is that the skills are worth the grind, and a balance of interesting quests, a storyline, and an intricate crafting system...etc. This game is a bit more sophisticated than most *shrug* I wish it were out sooner ^-^

Thalui89

Seems pretty cool to me, bit sad to hear about the rebirthing costing but i guess if theres some grind to it then you wont be rebirthing often anyway http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif' and it optional anyway. But yeah I'm currently looking for a nice online game to play so i look forward to that beta testing/releasing http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif. Looks kinda crazy! And i guess the fact its different takes the edge off the grind (#not that grind is neccessarily bad). http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif cheers for the wiki link seira

Any idea where to go to sign up for the closed beta when the beta is up n runnin or still a mystery? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I'm not singing the praises of Wow. It has a grind, it just disguises itself until you reach the level cap, then
jumps out of the shadows and stabs you in the cock with a "GOTCHA, SUCKA!"

The wiki says to get the full experience, you have to buy from the cash shop. Is it more restrictive than other
cash-shop MMOs? ie. You can disregard the cash shop prety much entirely; Most just seem to offer frivolous
items for purchase.

Also, does this game have those absolutely retarded gag items you can buy in the cash shop? I've seen it in
other games like this, where the have a nice fantasy world, and then ruin the immersion with girls running
around in schoolgirl outfits.

Looks like rebirthing costs real money. As in, having to buy character card thingies from their cash shop. |3

Some red flags for me is that character creation options sounds very limited, unless you shell out cash to
buy the premium character slot. So, there's going to be a lot of freebie clones running around.
Also, a big, big thumbs down for doling out races slowly afterwards. So initially, we're all going to be humans.
Although I can what they did there.. want an elf or giant? Buy a premium card, plebe!

Looks like more uninspired Lineage/RO type Point-And-Click combat. Are there many skills? Or is it only 2-3 attack
skills that you end up spamming for the majority of your character's life?

The trade skills is interesting. Actual farming and stuff. But do you need to cut down, say, 100 trees to make one bow?

I'm a little confused.. there are no levels? Only age of the character? Is says that it takes longer for the
character to age after a certain point. Going by that, it sounds like it just slows down, so instead of
every Saturday, your character ages every other Saturday. And each 'year' takes longer and longer.
If so, it's interesting that they divorced lvlzzz from combat grinding. If not, *shrug*, it's not any different
than other_generic_fantasy_MMO_5555.

All in all, it looks like it has some neat ideas.. but it's also F2P, so that means you'll have to deal
with the ugly side of the intertubes. You'll be farming corn and massaging sheep testicles next to
'D4RK_A55A55IN' and 'sexygurl16' |3

I noticed near the bottom this little blurb about a sequel. What got my attention was their mentioning you can
alter the environment, and use other ways to defeat enemies. Although I imagine the whole tripping the giant
with the chain is a 'special move' and you'll still have to kill it with auto attack + spamming your attack skill X3
Still, if they can pull off the interactive environments, I can see that as a step forward to a truely immersive
game world :3

Well, I wish I could answer more questions about the game, but my knowledge is limited, I only played 3-4 months on the jp server, trying to get by the best I could with limited language skills. The CB should be out the end of January, so maybe then it will be apparent if this game is worth playing or not.

People who've played more than I seem to disagree as to whether this game is worth playing w/o Cash shop. Its quicker to get more AP (abitity points) if you rebirth, so you can have more skills on that character. Certain parts of the storyline are closed off if you dont pay. Mounts/pets are cash shop, etc. etc. etc. You can buy rebirth cards, and other cash shop items from other players but I can imagine it would take forever to grind to get that kind of money.

Combat is not your usual, click-choose hotkey skill-click I can assure you - its more tactical and sophisticated than most of the cutesy korean grinders out there.
I cant stand that kind of combat and I think that is why those games are considered a "grind" - the combat is really boring!!!
*go to a field of mushrooms* *click til dead* *gather 5 mushroom caps so you can go to a new field of slightly larger monsters to click on lol*

If the game lacks interesting combat I simply cant play it, which is why Im looking forward to this game and AION. But I have a strong feeling that you have to pay for cash shop items to truly enjoy the game - thats ok by me if the game is amazing. We'll see I guess...at least its not just another grindy, boring, clickfest like so many other games being released.

AION does not interest me in the slightest, as it's the Korean attempt to rip off WoW.

well, just to let anyone know who is interested:
CB has started - I got my key at Fileplanet (with free acct)

Also keys are available at mmorpg and mmosite and those players can start Feb. 1.

To get a key, register at nexon, and at mabi homepage click download - those links will take you to a site giving away keys. The CB only lasts 6 days though - so if you dont get in, OB is soon~

Im playing right now and i really enjoy it! Its such a relaxing and cute game - so unique and so different. Hope to see you in game!

So, from what I've gathered, this is a prettier version of Maple Story, with just as much grind and more playershop-exclusive features?
It looks like an interesting game, but from what I can tell it'll be no different than Maple Story.

Seira7
Jan 31, 2008, 05:29 PM
its really hard to explain the game, best you can do is try and see if you like it or not. the cb is limited though - there really isnt any crafting =(

There are arbeits (part time jobs you run at various times a day for rewards), instanced dungeons, you can gain a lot of beginning skills, and can get aqainted with the combat system, which I understand more now -its real time, but is kind of turn-based/strategy - you read enemy patterns and movement and counterattack them.
You can also learn how to play music, and compose your own tunes.

The game doesnt really have anything in common with maple story - runescape is a better comparison.

lol, i knew the runescape comparison is not helping hype this game at all =O its a pretty, interesting runescape? (ive never played runescape, im just trying to think of a game with crafting features etc etc) Maybe fairyland would be a better game to mention? lol.

My only problem with the game is its horribly addictive. Between running errands, dungeon crawling and music composition, I must have spent 4 hrs straight playing yesterday - not good. My ass totally fell asleep.

I remember when I played Japanese Mabinogi. All I did was train the Windmaster skill everyday. Soon, I had a capoeira loli.

Out of curiosity, I gave this Mabinogi a try...after readinga bit on it and getting intrigued at this game's take on the class system: OOPS we didn't bother with a class system! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif But when I started PLAYING, I became skeptical because it had me clicking more than I did in WoW...but maybe about 10 minutes or so after leaving the newbie area, I was hooked. I normally despise having to use the mouse to do *EVERYTHING* (unless it's a strategy game) but I can make an exception to this. This might be the first Korean MMORPG that I've ever liked. (well I liked Maple story for about a day or two but that doesn't count. Piece of crap.) It's warmed my jaded heart...I dream of the day this goes retail and I can start going fighter/mage/bard or something. That bardolatry's gotta wait though, damn that composing thing looks daunting!

What the hell is Runescape? I've not really heard of Runescape until I came upon this thread, so I looked around a bit...over on the official Mabinogi forum, Runescape seems to be pretty well hated. I decided to give Runescape a shot...but I just got out of the tutorial and then the Mabinogi beta servers opened up so Runescape had to wait. So far it seems to play like total ass. Then again, I dunno how OLD this game is...

I think the runescape comparison comes from the intricate crafting system - runescape looks like ass to me me so Ive never tried it. Things like weaving, herbalism, refining, music composition, etc - and so came the saying "can I mine for fish" ....

but Mabi's skills are so fun to learn, and the world is so purty. I learned tailoring as well and made a beautiful priestess outfit yesterday - I love that theres so many colour combinations! Alas, Im set on making a warrior/blacksmith so tailoring will have to wait til I grow up - after several rebirths..I also read in future patches we can play as our pets, and learn hot air ballooning - cool~ Now I just want an OB asap...

It's been almost two weeks now (I think) since the Mabinogi closed beta servers closed down, and my hype for the game hasn't died down since. Stress test is like, the 24th of february I think, with march 5 being the release of the "Open Beta" which seems to be essentially what we as players would treat as a full version---unlike with many newly launched western MMORPGs which play like betas but are treated as retail versions.

So close to Brawl...but, I'll still be on it since it's free to start out, and it's the best online RPG I've ever played since Monster Hunter. I can't wait!

kinda glad to see I'm not the only psu player excited about mabinogi http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif I got into the CB through nexon (no bugging me for being one of those chosen 5000 players. I don't need any grief about it >.<). to me it really feels like a totally different free mmo. challenging to figure out yet strangly relaxing to play, unless fighting golem who killed me too many times to count. plus not to mention the fact that you have to watch what you eat in game. *sigh* glad characters were deleted after CB cause my character ended up chubby after I accidentally hit the wrong button. made me eat a ton of food at once instead of reviving a fallen party member.

hope I can juggle playing brawl and mabinogi at the same time, but one shotting goblins with a 5 charge firebolt may draw me into the fantasy life for good XD
