the way Blaze makes her entrance is so cool! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

the new remix music is amazing though, it seems
to stay very true to the style of the games.

I like it when the person who posted the video says it's 'not' a hacked game.

"It’s a Homage to the whole Sega Megadrive/Genesis saga, a NON comercial freeware game.

To remake the game the original sprites have been ripped adding new moves, new enemies and characters have been added respecting the game style.

The stages, some new and some completely redesigned, have new effects, more colors and scroll layers than their originals.

Regarding music, several musicians have helped remixing and improving the original soundtracks."

The person didn't bother picking the 1up?

Maybe he doesn't know what hacked really means.

Hacked means you modify an existing piece of code. The guy created an entirely new game, using the sprites from the Streets of Race games.

There are several hacked versions of classic games lying here and there - most of them crappy as all hell. So the guy wants to make it clear he didn't just go hack a ROM file.

But techincally it's still a hack, he used the game engine, sprites, and other IP to modify the existing game into something "new".

Indeed, this is very much a hack. A good one, but a hack nonetheless.

Oh man, nostalgia hit home there http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

I think I'm one of the few who preferred the original Streets of Rage to SoR2 and onwards though. Nice video- when I saw the title I was worried they'd ruin the game http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

I don't think you properly understood what KodiaX said. The only thing this guy is using from any of the original Streets of Rage games is artwork, which is ripped easily enough. This guy coded the software himself. As in, he, personally, wrote the code for this particular Streets of Rage game, rather than a professional coder working for a development team at Sega. He didn't take someone else's code and modify it, he wrote his own from scratch. In other words, he didn't use the game engine.

As for Intellectual Property, again, it looks to me as though the only such thing he's re-used is the sprites, and that wouldn't make it a hack, anyway. That would make it a rip-off, at best.

well either way it's an enhancement of the originals. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif hey I wonder
if they found it too troublesome to include 4 players, then again,
one is enough to clean up those enemies. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

It appears that I was under the wrong impression. After reading the remake's makers blog I see that he did in fact code a new engine. Well regardless of it being a hack or not (dispite the negative connotation applied to the word "hack") it's a good game.

Well, if it's his own game, it wouldn't be considered illegal to download ,right? Where can it be found?

I was never too into this game, but this, eh... non-hack looks pretty sweet.

Artea - I dunno if the PSOW condones that we post 'questionable' links to video game sites.

I guess I was wrong to say that it was a 'hack' game, but I had different type of context for 'hacking', but I got the definition wrong. I mean when I first looked at it (besides the ripping the sprites), he did figure out how to do the "SoR2 and SoR3 engine"... to make from scratch could prove some difficulty unless you really know what's going on. I guess it's no altercation but the thinking of using reverse engineering gets to me a tad bit.
