inconsistent sound

my music s fine but my sound effects sometimes sound far away, and other times very loud and close, and it may even randomly get loud/quiet mid combo. character positioning doesnt change it either...any ideas?

Go to control panel
Open Sound and Audio devices
Go to audio tab
click advanced on your sound playback
go to performance tab
change hardware acceleration to basic

I'm gonna try this too as sometimes my SE come and go while I play, although the BG music is normally fine...

Where is this option located on Windows Vista? It's definatly not the same place.
