View Full Version : The PS2 NetPlay Keyboard: A Mockery of GC's Lack?

Look familiar, everyone?

http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/categories/products/product.asp?pf_id=231954

Lo and behold, the PlayStation 2 has received an authentic knock-off of the Japanese ASCII GameCube keyboard controller. Yes, the PS2, and not the GC.

I feel so unloved. Why have you forsaken me, Logitech?

Ok, I feel better know. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_nono.gif
Why i'm sure it can't be that hard to make a keyboard for the gamecube. It's probably more like Nintendo is not going to make the keyboard because they won't be putting out anymore online games. Either that or the online games are so far off that it's just not economically feasable right now.
Besides(anger set aside) we might get one after PS gets theirs. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_confused.gif

Hopefully, such a thing will become a reality, if the keyboard-desiring masses redirect their requests to Logitech. Not that I would be unhappy, as I prefer Logitech's PC peripherals above nearly all others.

However, I must wonder if the PS2 NetPlay keyboard will work on the GC with a PS to GC adapter.

Hmmmmmmm.

Lock and load, boys! We're going over to Nintendo to pay them a little...visit

=P

Logitech better give us a really nice keyboard after this mockery. Maybe a Bluetooth keyboard, even http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

However, I must wonder if the PS2 NetPlay keyboard will work on the GC with a PS to GC adapter.... Me too. *strokes chin*

If I REMEMBER, the main reason the previous keyboard/s for PS2 didn't work on GCN with the adaptor was because they hooked to the system via USB (Gameshark's keyboard), thus being useless for us keyboard starved induviduals.
Let us hope. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif

Otherwise... Screw you, Logitech! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_argh.gif How many PS2 games really support keyboards anyway? Jeez... 50,000+ PSO players in the US, and we still don't get jack. Funny how 3rd parties even produced maracas for Samba De Amigo, but screw us hardcore PSO freaks over.

Sorry to point it out but this will not work with Gamecube because it is a USB keyboard also. Read the site better, it says 2 cables with controller port and USB port interfaces.

1 thing I would like to see from Nintendo is a Wavebird keyboard. They have the stuff they just need to put it together.

Tavia, this isn't a knockoff of the Ascii GC keyboard.

It's actually a knock-off of Square's PlayOnline PS2 keyboard that was made in Japan.
If I remeber correctly, that keyboard came out for FFXI and was released far earlier than the Ascii board.

Yup, you're right. I looked up the respective information, and discovered that the Logitech PS2 KB has actually already been released in Japan as well.

You know what I also learned about it, though?

The KB part can be removed and used separately. That is sweet. (http://www.lan-kwei.com/ps2E/) I want a KB/Controller hybrid with a detatchable keyboard. Mmm, luxury.

Damnedness, though. The XBox has a USB to XBox converter. Where is the GameCube in all of this conversion madness?! I wonder if there would be a bottleneck problem with the GameCube's controller ports, but I really doubt they don't surpass the outdated USB 1.1 speeds.

Gah. Now I must wait impatiently for the PS/2 to GameCube keyboard converter kit.

Looks really nice, especially the fact that you can detatch the controller part from the ends. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif If I ever get a PS2 network adaptor (maybe I'll get one for Frequency and its upcoming sequel), I might just pick up one of these puppies.

Sorry, I just love The Simpsons, and had to quote that.

Yea, but the keyboard is still hella expensive.

That's pretty run of the mill for your nicer keyboards. Remember it has a $30 controller in it. If you go out and buy say... The Comfort Duo you're going to pay a similar price, and it's very difficult to go back to plain keyboards after using a really nice one.

Also it's a heck of a lot easier to make a keyboard for the PS2 since they use USB.

I'm just gonna wait and see what happens with the guys who are making that keyboard adapter on their own spare time. If they can make a kit that is easy to assemble, and isn't a blatant ripoff like the import keyboard, then I'll buy from them. Screw every keyboard manufacturer that didn't have to sense to see what kind of market PSO had in North America.

Nobody besides ASCII made a GC keyboard, probably because GC uses proprietary ports, and you need to know the specs for it to be able to map USB to GC. USB specs are readily available.

If Nintendo or ASCII won't divulge specs, people have to reverse engineer the GC and the ASCII keyboard and figure out how the signals work.
That takes some time to figure out. After all, that homemade KB to GC kit had a whole lot of EE stuff to analyze it.
