I don't think I would have realized it had I not gone to Walmart last night with my roommate and nearly been knocked flat by the huge pink, red, and white banners and glossy heart-shaped cutouts all over the place. Me, I'm pretty amped for Valentines Day this time around--it falls on a Thursday, which are the days of my week where I only have two classes. Score.

So even if you hate it, let's not ignore the fact that at least it's a day celebrating love (commercial and Hallmark-invented though it may be) and not a day celebrating massive head trauma. Or gang warfare. Or even more boring news stories about who won which primary and why. So try to give someone socially awkward a hug tomorrow, because remember, it's only a matter of time before the Earth is declared truly dying and we have to look to the sky and hope against hope that someone will descend from the heavens to save humanity with his guitar. And then ain't nobody gonna be able to hug nobody.

Regardless of what holiday it might be,your going to find someone who's going to be negative about it. I find it funny myself. I'm well aware of how "commercial" this holiday is,but it doesn't stop me from enjoying myself.(Having worked in retail a little while now,you catch on to a few things.) While tomorrow really doesn't pertain to me,you won't find me screaming at someone because I don't agree with it.

I definately have the "life is too short" mentality. I try take things as they come. With a bit more optimisim than I used to.

I love Valentine's Day! I have since I was little, and we decorated paper bags and handed out cartoon character valentines and conversation hearts! Of course, I'm a hopeless romantic... I sent my mommy tulips, and bought my son a box of candy, a card for Laguna, and I'm really hoping for a frog of some sort from him... I love frogs! Frogs, chocolate and flowers! Perfect V-Day for me!!

I have had bad experiences with V-Day in the past. For example, my ex dumping me the very week of it, then going out with my best friend on V-Day. That was my experience.

Fortunately, this year is different http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif I finally have a reason to enjoy the day and a girl to call my Valentine!

yesterday, i bought someone a shirt.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/Firocket1690/love_hate_shirt.jpg

then scribbled one of my old favourite sketches around it; a rose with one wing and one leaf. rose around the upper left shoulder area, and the wing underlining, and the leaf was on the other corner. I dunno. I had fun making it, but I don't know how long that sharpie's going to last on it though :3

today, I got a few homemade chocolate fondants in return. and an orange. and a letter. with scribbles and pretty drawings.

I gave the shirt yesterday to wear today. and i got the chocolate today 'cause I won't be tomorrow (internship). 'cause we're cool like that. gah, too much gifting and not enough hugging ._.;

This day is just a way to earn money for the economy. you could act like this any day of the year, but apparently it's an excuse. This has go tto be the ONLY day Idon't like, except for Friday the 13th. For obvious reasons.

it didn't start out as a corporate event, so theres no reason to dismiss it. I always make-my-own cards anyways etc. Many people in this thread have little personal gifts too, so its not so bad.

Shame on you people for not recognizing dates of historical significance. Valentines day was not created by gift card companies as some of you suggest (although I do hope you know better). There is a reason why it's called Valentine's day.

Let me go into that for what's probably the third year in a row.

Ah, Valentines day; is there really a better holiday in all of the year (probably)? It is a day for love, a day for romance, a day for tenderness and kindhearted revelry, a day to blow my savings on shit nobody needs. More than that though, it is a day for hope. People all over the world look upon this day as the one chance out of the entire year to get into some sort of contact, whether it be known or in secret, with that special someone that they bare feelings for. But why does the occasion land on this day? Is the day celebrated as Valentines really, as some people feel, simply a chance for commercialism to run rampant? Or is there more behind the entire celebration? To find the truth and meaning behind the day, we are going to have to go back in time for a moment. Clear your minds you people, and concentrate on what has been.

A long time ago, a very long time ago, back in the days of war and the great Roman Empire, February 14th was known as the day to honor the Queen of all the Roman Gods and Goddesses, Juno. The Romans also knew Juno as the Goddess of women and marriage. But while February 14th was the holiday for the Goddess Juno, it wasn’t until the following day, February 15th that the Feast of Lupercalia began.

Back then in Rome, young boys and girls led lives that were strictly separate from each other. Despite how ludicrous this may sound today however, on the date of February 14th one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. During the drawing, the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each boy would then draw a girl's name from the jar and would become partners with the girl that he chose for the duration of the festival. But the pairing between the children sometimes carried on much longer, occasionally lasting an entire year. Often, during this prolonged coupling, the two would fall in love and would later marry.

While under the rule of Emperor Claudius the 2nd, Rome became involved in many bloody and unpopular battle campaigns. Claudius the Cruel, as he became known, was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Viewing his country and the situation, he grew to believe that the reason the military power was waning was because Roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. Why go to war when you could be getting laid? As a result of this observation, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. Depression loomed large on the horizon for the people of the Roman Empire, but all was not lost, for it was at this point in history that we come into contact with the greats Adam & Jason... well no, we came into contact with the dude we call Saint Valentine.

The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius the 2nd. He and another by the name of Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and continued to marry couples in secret. But, like so many other great and kind deeds throughout history, word got out, and the secret was shattered. In punishment for the deeds that Saint Valentine committed, he was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off.

While in prison, Saint Valentine apparently tried to remain cheerful. I’m not certain how you feel about this, but if I were in prison and facing a painful death sentence, I think that staying cheerful would be almost an impossible task. Back then death sentences were carried out in a matter of days or weeks from the initial verdict, unlike the practice of modern law, where a person can sit on death row for twenty or more years. But because Saint Valentine strove to remain happy about his situation, some truly wonderful things started to happen. In no time, young people came to the jail to visit him, throwing flowers and notes up to his window.

Yes… throughout the fear and oppression that was brought upon the people by the Roman Emperor, the people were showing that they too believed in love.

One of the young people that visited Saint Valentine while he was locked up was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father had allowed her to visit the Saint in his cell, and the two of them would often sit and talk for hours. She helped the Saint keep his spirits up and agreed that he had done the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day that Saint Valentine was to die, he left the guards’ daughter a note that thanked her for her friendship and loyalty. He signed it, "Love from your Valentine."

It is believed that this note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day, and it was written on the day he died, February 14, 269 A.D.

Over time, the pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome sought to do away with the pagan element in these feasts of love by substituting the names of saints for those of women. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this new feast.

So it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way. But the question now is if that really matters to most people in the modern day? Besides the historical facts that cause us to seek the celebration of love on this day, there is that feeling of warm emotions that spur us forward, for it is on this day, if no other, that we are able to express those emotions without fear of humiliation, or not. Love is a wonderful feeling for everybody, and February 14th has been set up to remind us of that. When you care for someone, when you are kind and gentle, then you are showing that feeling. So then, remember from now on to show those who are close to you that they are special, keep them close in your mind, and close in your heart. And don't be so pessimistic to simply dismiss special dates and traditions in the future. There is a history to why most of them are practiced in the way they are on the days they are.

Worried about having someone do a "tl;dr," perhaps only provide the link next time, no harm done if nobody clicks it themself. Also guilt trip of a "shame on you people," "You people?! Who you calling you people?!" avoid using that next time too, to prevent someone from say glossing over your informative post.
