Online fees

I saw that it costs 9 bucks to play online, but I was wondering if that was only through official servers. Could I play online for free through private servers?

In a nutshell, the official servers for most versions are closed. And while there are private servers, we cannot discuss much about them.

If it is GC, DC, or BB, you are better off fiding it out on your own.
