I attend the University of Wisconsin Stout, and a few days ago, three students died in an off-campus house fire. The deaths received a lot of media coverage, and the Westboro Baptist Church (the God hates fags people) decided to come picket at our student center for about an hour to thank God for the fire.

Hundreds of students turned out to protest their protest, and the WBC left within 15 minutes.

Everyone in attendance has won 25 internets. You may pick them up at the student center between 4PM and 6PM.

I can honestly say that I have never had a better reason not to be in class, ha. I just wish I'd thought to go to Walmart last night to get a huge poster board so I could've made my own sign to hold up.

Ugh... the moment anyone says "God said..." I immediately get this nervous feeling that they have some ulterior - and likely unsavory - motive. I must say I'm also surprised at how easily they gave up, though...

The irony is, when something bad befalls them; they tell themselves "God will be with us in this time of need", as opposed to "I wonder why God gave me cancer."

Really, God hates fags? I think its pretty well known that God hates everyone, but equally. =]

Haha, nice one- Westboro Baptist Church are a bunch of ignorant hypocrites anyway, good to see some humiliation of them.

Wow, three students die in a fire, and religious activists go out and turn a death into a "wrath of God' session?

Sheesh. Looks to me as if they're getting a bit desperate in attempts for gaining followers.

Awesome though to see a double protest, with one protesting the other, right behind them. Way to go.

Your school has a bunch of great students. I'm catholic, and I'm glad they did that.
then again, catholics and protistants have issues with each other anyway

And I love that one poster: "Stop using me to justify your hate."

Looks to me as if they're getting a bit desperate in attempts for gaining followers. From what I've seen, the WBC are not religious activists looking for followers, but rather a group looking for attention and money from lawsuits. A large portion of them are lawyers, and from what I remember, almost all of them (I remember there being about 100 or so) are in the same family. Their lawsuits are often based on being denied the ability to protest, insufficient protection when they do protest, and probably some civil suits due to being abused while protesting.

WBC I'm sure is hated by almost all true Baptists and Protestants.

I am amazed that there was able to be that "double protest" (as someone above called it) without any violence. Major congrats to everyone who made them leave so quickly.

I'd say the people who died were probably straight. The WBC just uses the same signs for every protest, including the ones they do at as many funerals for fallen soldiers as they can. By the pics it looks like they may change a few based on the circumstances.

Yeah, they had ones with a burning house and "GOD'S FURY" or something written on it for the protest this morning. They generally attribute every tragic thing that happens to acceptance of homosexuality, no matter the context; the three kids who died recently weren't gay as far as I know.

I'm not even really sure what to say about all that. People really amaze the hell out of me.

I think the funniest sign I saw there was a giant 5x5 foot one that said "HOMOS ARE SWEET." Although I'm definitely partial to the "I'm a huge douche" and "We are idiots" signs, haha.

But yeah, a great turnout for a great cause. I'm so damn amped to be a Stout student today.

Personally, I'd wear the hugs shirt if it was made out of 100% cotton (the softer sort), of course (okay, I probably wouldn't, unless it was REALLY soft).

Glad to hear about the counter-protest, and I'm curious now as to the group's lawyerliness. Would be an amazingly complicated money making scheme.
