View Full Version : GTA IV Multiplayer = World of Warcraft goes out of business

although the trendy perspective of GTA being a crime
game, that doesn't mean it can't be used for peaceful
and positive uses too! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

the multiplayer could potentially be the next
ultimate sandbox world! And it would have many
advantages over a mmorpg: no level grinding,
no level gaps, no corrupt auction houses, no monthly
fee (PSN is free and Xbox Live services are a
giveaway at just $50 a year.) so it really leads to
great pick up and play immersion and fun.

well ya, Liberty City isn't even half the size of mmorpg worlds like FF11, but at least you can get to the fun without having to be level capped and have all this expensive gear to be useful in combat. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

but ya it should still be a fine treat, GTAIV city is
the largest city ever created. And it looks kinda
futuristic at night (well a 'lil.)

So ya it will definitely be used for many purposes,
especially the free roam mode, with the city fully
accessible, players could just hang out with fwends,
maybe play vigilante, hide and seek and other stuff.

Well ya the character creation doesn't sound deep, but neither was FF11's Hume selection and it still had some good options.

And thankfully you won't need a license or XP to
drive anything. Plus even motorcycles have space for
two!! (why didn't chocobos allow that?)

and the host can set the pedestrian and traffic
density, weather, and YES, YOU CAN DISABLE THE
DOTS/GAMERTAGS ABOVE PLAYERS HEADS. You don't have
to crouch to make them disappear, it's confirmed the
host can make them disappear completely.

well ya the multiplayer includes competitive modes,
but I'm not really interested in that, but will
probably do so to rank up, since that gives you
cash to buy more clothes and custom options. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

but ya, it may not have magic, forests, and dungeons,
but it could fill in that flavor of freedom that
even mmorpgs don't offer. Now if the city was a
little more like Omikron or Akira with more
futuristic flavor and it could be even better.

And each hosted session may not support 1000s of
players at once, but then again, you only need like 1
to 8 fwends to have fun with anyways.
the pedestrians and traffic can fill in the rest of the massively populated mood.

There'll definitely be lots to explore, lots to do,
and stuff to have fun with without having to act so
juvenile. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif so ya, the freedom definitely brings
up a lot of potential to enjoy it in different ways!

and you can probably solo online too I think like
Burnout Paradise did something like that where you
can still travel around while waiting for ppl to join
or something. but ya, wonder if the character creation will be a cheat for offline play too? that
would really help if online is not available for
whatever reason, caues ya, the only real flaw is that
GTA IV's story and main character are dumb, awful
and lame.

it would be nice to have a character change cheat like GTA3. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Some people like all that grinding and capping. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif Besides, GTA IV isn't really in the same category as WOW and FFXI, and some people don't even like GTA (like me). I think it has the potential to be fun online for GTA fans, but I don't think it'll hurt the other MMO titles that are already out there.

Everytime a big game comes along, it's supposed to put everything else out of business.

To date, as far as I can recall, it's never happened.

Someone stop this.

Saner
Apr 15, 2008, 12:50 PM
ya I don't like GTA (the crime aspect in general) either but I like the freedom aspect and stuff
that is somewhat related to mmorpgs in the travel aspects. and GTA IV online may provide some really
fun stuff even mmorpg devs should take note of.

I mean Chocobos are not that different from cars/bikes.
Going from one part of the city to the other side is not that different
from traveling from South Gustaberg to the Dunes.
pedestrians are not that different from mobs that aggro and mobs
that don't.
Well ya it's still different genres but ya they do share some similiarities
in that they can be compared to each other to a certain extent. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

um but character creation online, you can choose to be a woman.
Not sure if offline with havea cheat code like GTA3 that lets you play
as any pedestrian model in the game, but ya at least online, you can
be whatever your want pretty much from what I read.

Saner, how the hell do you come up with these topic titles? Like, what in your mind would fathom that a game like GTA IV would put WoW out of business? Come on, use your head; two different genres, two obscenely different games, the history of Warcraft alone could chain-smoke the GTA series as a whole out of business.

Will GTA IV be a fun game? Sure. Will people play the hell out of it? Of course. Is it going to be a game to put any MMORPG out of business? Fuck no. Expecially not WoW.

Pahaha, yeah. Actually, of all the games with active fan bases, I've got to say that WoW is probably the one least likely to feel even the tiniest mosquito bite from an online GTA. It's like, "New Russian dialect announced! Is English soon to be a dead language?!"

If you didn't, don't go scaring the general public with your announcements!!! Mass panic in the streets! Blizzard on Red Alert!

"GTA Hype/Discussion topic" in a simple topic title gets across the message just fine.

Those interested already or by the game will click, those let down by your bait title without some source or quote will not like what they see.

Understandable?

No, it gives exaggerated "WTF" value.

"Darth Vader = Lukes father?????"

Exaggerated, but still has merit as being plausible and true. Pending a DNA test.

battlefields. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

But that's just the same to comparing GTA's online mode to WoW http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_nono.gif

Just because you have people in an area that is explorable doesn't make it the same. That would be like comparing Burnout: Paradise City to WoW :/

Special pay more money for extra junk edition looked interesting with that lockbox and duffel bag. Like the "Mr. Basketball LeBron V" with the school locker packaging, only other place I'd seen a similar thing offered.

Just getting your own lockbox and slap a Rockstar sticker on it, same thing no need to pay extra for "limited junk," is the thing to do. Teach your kids to pass such info onto their kids.

Game looks fun as well, I'm not keeping up to date every little news blurb that gets out though, no reason to hype things up and be disappointed.

While the GTA series has a bigger fan base than WOW, that doesn't mean fans of each like both games. GTA and WOW are 2 different genres. Not only that, GTA is mostly geared toward comsole players while WOW is to PC.

I never really cared for GTA, but I sense the online will boost its popularity and bring more people into it. It's not really going to put everything out of business, and I'm sure something like Metal Gear Solid 4's hype won't even be scratched when GTA4 releases.

WoW / Blizzard go out of business? Don't make me laugh...
85% of online subscriptions in the UK are to Blizzard.
They have over 10 million players on WoW, let alone Starcraft...
There's no stopping the behemoth juggernaut we know as Blizzard.

"What single design feature are you most proud of?

Garbut: Not one particular thing -- the opposite, really. I love the cohesiveness of the entire experience. It feels to me like a real place. The "living, breathing city" phrase gets bandied about a lot, but I think this feels more vibrant and alive than anything I've experienced in a game. When you have that feeling, and you are standing on top of a skyscraper with the world sprawled out beneath you and you know you can climb down and visit every inch that you can see and that it will all feel as vibrant, varied and detailed as the area you are in, I think that's pretty special."

Over 8,000,000 subscribers, at £9 a month? You think GTA IV even has a hope of denting their income?

I know a lot of people that play the GTA games after they've fully completed it, just freeroaming and all that. The prospect of being able to do the same online with people around the world? Not that much more interesting in my opinion. You make it sound like people are going to abandon WoW and go play GTA.

Personally, there's a good long list of games i'd rather play online than Grand Theft Auto.

nuuuu, the topic title was jus a joke. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif still, there are many advantages GTAIV's world
will have that mmorpgs won't offer. ya its different styles, but they both share the
foundation of a world you can immerse yourselves in and interact with other players in
an enviornment that holds many possibilities and ways to have fun with it.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/868/868629p1.html#comments

"Free Mode
As much as we've loved Cops 'n' Crooks, Free Mode is going to be the bread and butter of GTA IV multiplayer. Here's the deal: Up to 16 players can run around Liberty City doing whatever they want. Create your own game modes, hunt for Easter eggs, work together to survive a six-star wanted level -- if you can dream it, there's probably a way to do it. And this mode begins in the most unusual, jarring way.

You begin in a standoff with the other players. Everyone spawns in a circle and there is, at least the first time you play Free Mode, a brief moment of surprise when no one does a damn thing. This lasts a few seconds before someone takes out a gun and shoots their neighbor in the face. But this standoff isn't just to start the killing (and jump people around the city with their first respawn); it also allows players to talk about what they want to do in Free Mode. This way you don't have to hunt for anyone in order to discuss plans to take a bus caravan down to Star Junction or to agree that there will be a knife fight atop the Algonquin Bridge. Or you can just blow each other up. It's Free Mode -- do whatever the hell you want.

As with the other MP modes, the host has plenty of options to customize the experience, from setting the level of traffic, to turning cops on or off, to the time of day, to weapons available and so much more."

kewl! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

Most of your original post is nothing but hyping up what GTA IV can do in comparison to what WoW already does.

actually most of it seems to compare to FF11...

Anyways, as long as there is enough people to form a mafia, I'd be happy. If we're going to make a game about crime, I want the works, fuck whatever that lawyer says. Mafia's, drug distribution, gangwars, pimping, chop shops, all of it must be online.

Territory battles will be held within the cities, your gang/mafia gains money steadily as you hold these territories and sell you "products," collect protection money, and money is distributed based on your ranking in the gang/mafia. You earn money yourself by commiting organized thefts and taking part in takeovers of districts. Cops will be warring against you on a regular basis and the military with their tanks and choppers, and it's up to you and your illegally smuggled in rocket launchers to take them down or swarm and hijack tanks if possible (or pay someone off for one.) The stronger your gang is, the more the cops/military attack you rather than the other gangs.

Unlike other MMOs, this will also emphasize inter guild gang fights, to try and make it to the top of your mafia/gang so you can reap the most cash with a higher gang ranking. Though since you obviously wouldn't want to be killing gang mates all the time, you'll be having competitions like who can steal the most in an alloted time, avoid the cops the longest, beat down the most pedestrians within a time limit, etc. However, you will have the option to kill one another in a fight if you both agree to it. Loser dies and starts back at bottom rung of the gang as a "new member," winner goes up in rank. The benefit of a higher ranked winning a match is they get whatever money and items the person challenging them had worked up. To make sure dirt poor challengers don't become a problem, you would need a certain percentage of money or points (perhaps based on weapons and ammo amount you have) of the higher rank you're challenging before the game even allows you to make the challenge. So their reward will always be adequate and there is a reason for them to accept you're challenge. There will also be a limit to how many challenges a higher rank can deny when the challenger meets that percentage (since he would then be showing fear of the lower gang members, and must prove himself better.)

It will be a controversial game of a most epic proportion if balanced correctly. Of course, I really doubt GTA IV will be like that, but who knows, one day maybe videogames will be immoral enough http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

well it won't be long before the cheats are revealed sometime this week.

probably gonna get posted here too:

wonder if the guide will list them all, it would be a pain if there are some hidden

on the plus side that means more chances for a greater amount and better
selection of cheats. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif
