I've been listining to some of the hip-hop/rap as of late, and it's been pissing me off. Because I like some of the beats, but then you listen to the lyrics its the same thing over and over again. There are a few "REAL" guys out there that are holding it down Lupe Fiasco, Common, Jin or The Emcee, Talib Kweli (Refered to me by a PSO-world member), Wu-Tang clan (Still around but barely, I don't know if 8 diagrams was the last CD)... I can't think of anymore people. But yeah the reason these guys i've listed aren't that big are because its to late, the young people have been infected and haven't had a chance to experience what real rap is. It comes from the heart, y'know? These guys like Hurricane Chris, Souilja Boy, and various other names changed the image of the industry... Know what, these songs will sum up what I mean: Dumb it down by Lupe Fiasco, Food Fight: Jin and Far east movement, There is another one, I forgot it... DAMN... The people by Common will do in the place of the song I forgot. LOL http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif But yeah, whats your thoughts?

For me the rap industry as a whole has gone down hill since the introduction of krunk music. Combine that with the "thug" image the media loves to stamp on hip-hop and you have the commercialization of what was once a highly innovative genre in music. Now you have to go underground just to find some good stuff.

Most of the new stuff doesn't catch my interest. I still listen to lil wayne though and whatever else that sounds interesting but crap like soulja boy is just... crap

Wayne's just got an awesome way of singing his lyrics that I can't stop listening to him even though some of his songs really suck

Try some underground rap (particularly anything involving MF Doom or Del tha Funkee Homosapien), as it tends to avoid some of the problems running rampant with mainstream rap.

Only person I listen to is Lupe, and that isn't very often.

People like Soulja Boy have me go into a nerd rage over the genre. I will say that I guess he's trying to take things in a more positive direction instead of violence but, I wish he didn't suck at doing it http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif.

If you guys think most modern rap sucks, you aren't looking hard enough. There are PLENTLY of quality hip-hop acts out there for those determined enough to find them.

I suggest you try out Pandora.com or any other sites that give recommendations. Also surf blogspots, there are tons of them out there that host real music on them.

Oh, also, some trip-hop related stuff veers a lot closer to hip-hop category. Tricky, for instance, is a great rapper, and DJ Shadow makes some entirely excellent instrumental hip-hop stuff. Or you could always just download some Gnarls Barkley. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Soulja Boy is one of the few artists who can produce songs that have no redeeming value whatsoever. I become suicidal whenever one of his auditory turds issues from a speaker. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif

Another excellent group, although most of their material isn't rap. But, oh, how excellent the raps are. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_yes.gif

Two groups I like are:

Immortal technique- some of songs are wayy too into himself or "LOLHAETBUSH" but he has pumped out some good shit.

Nujabees- It's a fusion rap group, they're farrr from mainstream, sick beats and worth listening too.

Nujabes isn't a group, he's a single person.
And if you like Nujabes, you should check out Fat Jon and Nomak.

I don't listen to Hip-hop that much anymore. A decade ago I was all over it. Most of the new stuff sucks. I barely turn on the radio anymore. I'd rather listen to my Illmatic, and other 90"s stuff.

Some of these names bring Samurai Champloo to mind. Didn't Nujabes and Fat Jon do "Battlecry"?

Yeah they do. But that song doesn't even compare to their other works.

I still listen to some Hip Hop from the 90s. I don't approve of Radio Music, MTV also has a bad reputation for playing what they call "Hip Hop"

Rap these days is more about street cred than actual talent; couple that with a decent producer, and any idiot can go platinum. Just look at 50 Cent....

Good point... http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif And we can't blame it strictly on the rappers, they wouldn't be making money if people wern't paying attention, just eatin it up. Not trying to throw the other rappers under the bus, don't get me wrong. I just don't like how the guys like Lupe get little recognition because he isn't singin about ass and titties (Do'nt know if i'm allowed to say that... If not sorry).

Shadowpawn

Maybe's better that Lupe doesn't have instant fame like Soulja boy because he might change, you know? Look at what happened to Eminem, he USED to be a decent MC then he got famous and Encore happened. -_- I swear I've heard someone purposely create a crap song (Go listen to Puke) and admit that he did it because the fans will be it any way. That's just low, Em.

That's the thing, commercial rap has devolved into little more than a dance floor staple. Soulja Boi came out with a new dance, and it's a #1 hit. I don't think they even realize how stupid it sounds.
