Japan may be at the cutting edge of green technologies, but its capital has the least environmentally conscious residents of eight of the world's richest cities, a poll showed.

More than four in 10 Tokyo residents -- 41.6 percent -- said they "don't want to sacrifice a convenient lifestyle to prevent global warming," according to the poll results published recently by Japanese advertising agency Hakuhodo.

The percentage was the highest among the residents of Tokyo, New York, Paris, London, Milan, Moscow, Toronto and Frankfurt, and well above the average of 29.7 percent, according to the survey of 2,600 people.

However, the poll showed that nearly 90 percent of Tokyo residents feel threatened by global warming. They also came tops in responding that "environmental protection is more important than economic growth."

So lets make this clear; they care, just so long as they don't have to put forth any effort. Splendid!

And they should feel threatened, their asses live on an island so they'll be the ones feeling the effects alot more than people who live on a continent.

The sad truth is, most of the human population is not willing to give up comfort they already have in order to "stop global warming". Because it's too big a problem to grasp (this part i can understand).

When I was in Japan, everywhere they're pretty big on recycling and such.

But they do stupid things. Example:

I bought a small box on kit-kats, all of them were individually wrapped. Like, there was the box, a bag with the mini candies in it, then the candies were wrapped. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

Warmer temperatures are what I want right now. We've been below average the whole year so far. I'd be happy if global warming could get us back to average.

Great example there with China. They don't have to follow the Kyoto Protocol, just simply say, "Hey, this is how much we are polluting." India is the same. And, yes, the United States signed the Kyoto Treaty (everybody's favorite envornmental messiah in fact, Al Gore). However, we won't ratify it until developing nations (formerly third-world nations) are required to follow it as well. Afterall, why the hell should we follow something if the largest polluter in the world is exempt from the economic impact, namely China? Especially since China is one of the fastest growing polluters in the world (India too). Still, it doesn't really matter in the end since many of the signers actually increased their carbon emissions since 1990 rather than decrease them. (UK, Spain, Canada, Japan, among many others) And even more countries did not meet their quotas, including the EU itself.

We might not have signed it, but the whole point is that a sizable chunk of Japan's populace don't want to sacrifice convenience for the environment. The results in New York City, apparently, were more positive than those in Japan.

In other words, you totally missed the point of this topic. Yay! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Coincidentally, one of the world's cleanest cities is in Japan (Katsuyama) http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

In all honesty though, I don't really know many people who care about the earth's environment. Lots of people say they do, but they don't really do much about it. I constantly see people throwing wrappers/containers/bags/etc. on the street, floor, wherever there isn't a trash can. Not to mention tons of people driving gas guzzlers.

It's kind of sad that it usually takes something like a cop to scare people into disposing garbage properly. It's also going to be too late for us to change our habits when we really start suffering for all the stuff we did. >.>

survey of 2,600 people

Because 2,600 people surveyed in a worldwide study make an accurate representation of anything. There are more than 32 million people just in Tokyo. Even if the survey was just of people in that area that would put it at being 1/12,307 surveyed. Who's willing to bet that those other 12,306 might just have different opinions from that one lucky enough to be surveyed? The same could be said of the accuracy of any city that was part of the study.

It's a random survey, you don't need to poll 100% of the population to get a grasp of what the ratio would be.

You people are so nitpicky over this shit it's funny.

Hay I know lets look at everything except the topicand discuss that! =D

Blitzkommando

You don't know about statistics and it's blatantly obvious. You can't make an accurate statistic with such a tiny figure, random or not. That would be like going to a neighborhood in Amarillo, Texas and asking the people there about "X issue" and saying that based on the survey 1 out of 40 Americans believe [insert belief here]. Statistics are bunk, and someone claiming to be as intelligent as you should know that. You take a survey of 0.008125% of the population and say that it is somehow accurate in representing said population. That's beyond laughable. You're just trolling for people that are either a) not fooled by statistics and call bullshit or b) LOLWEEABOOS

Statistics are bunk, and someone claiming to be as intelligent as you should know that.

Where are you pulling that from? Maybe calm down abit dood, you're mixing ass-talk with what could be a decent discussion. Rather than focus on the topic and the article, you people have quite effectively turned it all into some mar on Japan and me being an uber-intelligent troll.

Should I thank you, or laugh at the mixed back of replies that for the most part have had absolutely nothing to do with the topic.

Thanks for the laughs I guess. =]

This can be locked, no use trying to have a discussion when people have sand in their orifices. =D
