Shining Aquas
Jul 22, 2008, 06:08 PM
Hello everybody, it's Shining Aquas here and ready to bring you the second super list.

If you are unfamiliar with what I'm doing, I'll give you the skinny. Basically for the next week, I will be collecting lists of everybody's 10 absolute most favorite nostalgic video games. To submit, just post in this topic with your personal 10 favorite (preferably in order).

Here are the general rules:
1)You may only submit 1 list from you, but you may submit additional lists from family and friends. Just let me know when you do.
2)You may edit your list at any time. Instead of simply editing your first post, just make another post that says LIST EDIT at the top. Don't worry, I'll find you.
3*)Let me make the "nostalgic" part clear. I am willing to accept anything from the following game systems: NES, SNES, Genesis, Master System, Atari, Saturn, Gameboy, Nintendo 64, Playstation 1, Dreamcast, and PC games made in 2000 or earlier.

*This rule only applies to this particular list, the first 2 rules are for all of them

I am accepting lists....(checks watch)............................NOW.
I am closing the submissions next Wednesday.

Sorry it took so long to make this, I ended up with WAY more games than expected.
But, after a long wait of about 3 days, I have the results. So, which game stands supreme?

10 - Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast)

It's true that this game had remarkably addictive gameplay, and the items were amazing, but all that is nothing when compared to the incredible innovation this game brought. This is one of the first true MMORPG's to ever be released and successfully maintained on a console system, something no one had ever tried before. Phantasy Star Online has helped to shape MMORPG's in today's world, and more games should follow in it's footsteps. Also Re-released later for the Gamecube and Xbox systems.
http://i8.ebayimg.com/04/c/05/9c/e0/1b_8.JPG

9 - Tetris Attack {or Panel de Pon in Japan} (Super Nintendo)

While it's true this game has absolutely nothing to do with actual Tetris, it is only named Tetris Attack because they wanted the American release to have a name they knew people could relate with. Tetris attack is entirely similar to Panel de Pon in gameplay, appearence, and even music! The only major change was that all the chibi-anime girls were replaced with various monsters from Yoshi's Island, a game released prior. As an extra piece of trivia, if any of you were wondering where Lip's Stick comes from in the Super Smash Bros games (you know, that flower stick), the main character in Panel de Pon is a girl named Lip and she uses a flower shaped wand (Quite literally Lip's Stick). Coincedince? I think not.
http://www.fixpert.com/images/2006/07/tetris-attack.jpg

8 - Final Fantasy III (or VI in Japan) (Super Nintendo)

Okay, I'll admit I never actually played this game (to my shame), but that put aside it's still Final Fantasy so you know what to expect. Monsters, Magic, and high Adventure awaits you in what is considered one the greatest RPG's for the Super Nintendo, and still one of the best today.
http://recensioni-videogiochi.dvd.it/images/Final_Fantasy_6_Advance/Final-Fantasy-6-Advance-02-m.jpg

7 - Pokemon Red/Blue version (GameBoy)

Before this amazing series was eternally killed by the still airing television show, Pokemon was the shit. I mean, seriously everyone knew about this phenomena when it hit. Unfortunately, no one had any idea what it was about, the only ones who could really understand it were the children, and that's all it takes. Popularity aside, the original (and even the newer Pokemon games like Diamond and Pearl) have an excellent battle engine for an RPG that literally allows for millions of possibilities. The only problem I have with it is that in order to catch all 150 of these psychotic little Furbies, you need to buy both of the games and constantly trade between them, which requires a friend or at least a second GameBoy. Gotta Catch 'Em All? No thank you.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/ca/Pokemon_red_box.jpg

6 - Chrono Trigger (Super Nintendo)

Holy. Fucking. Shit. This game is probably one of the single greatest games ever made. Every other game of it's time just looked at it and spontaneously combusted with an overdose of awesome. By using a unique take of the Final Fantasy Battle Engine, and throwing in a massively dynamic plot and very enjoyable characters, Chrono Trigger is a timeless classic that will survive the tests of time. Literally.
http://ui31.gamespot.com/542/chronot5_2.jpg

5 - Super Mario Bros. 3 (Super Nintendo)

There's not much to say about this game that hasn't already been said. This is the true sequel to the Classic Super Mario Bros. (No, SMB2 does NOT count), and it could not have been more amazingly refined. With a large plethora of unique levels that sprawl across 8 worlds, Mario 3 is a game that will have you jumping turtles for many hours on end. If you haven't played this before, get out from under your rock and find a rom/emulator combo so you can play it on your computer.
http://lostinsubtitles.com/images/SuperMario3firstlevel.gif

4 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)

Many people consider this the greatest Zelda game of all time, and I would almost agree with them (Course, I generally enjoy Twilight Princess more). With stunning visuals that helped effectively push the limits of the Nintendo 64 console, Ocarina creates an amazingly detailed atmosphere and provides fairly challenging dungeons. Also, I got to give this game credit for having one of the better Zelda story lines (Again, other than TP), especially when the next game, Majora's Mask, didn't even have Zelda as a character. Oh well, this game was and still is an amazing journey. Just don't forget to bottle some fairies.
http://www.smid1990.co.uk/images/downloadoftheweek.jpg

3 - Final Fantasy VII (Playstation)

Okay, I know there are gonna be a lot of angry people saying that this should be number 1 hands down, but I'm playing by my statistics and I have to say that I'm actually very glad this game didn't get number 1. I feel that FFVII is highly overrated and not quite as good as everyone makes it out to be. Now, I'm not saying that it's a bad game, and I have to admit it is quite breathtaking, and the game's vast amount of customization via materia makes for an amazing battle system, but it just never feels like it lives up to it's unbreakable hype. Still, whether you like it or not, it still remains the most well known video game every created.
http://www.wikicheats.com/images/b/b3/Final_Fantasy_VII_Front_Page.jpg

2 - Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (Super Nintendo)

The first two Zelda games did a decent job introducing this amazing series to the public, but it was Link to the Past that I believe truly defines the Zelda games. It has the standard dungeons and the fields full of monsters and the near endless amount of side-quests (Most of which reward Heart Pieces) but what this game succeeds in the most is the world and story they created. This Zelda world is vast, full of many unique and riveting locales. From fields to lakes to mountains to forests, Zelda went all over the place and had a great touch of the creativity we all love in a Zelda game.
http://www.gamecyte.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/zelda_1.jpg

And the Number 1 nostalgic game of all time is:

1 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis)

Sonic, Tails, Robotnik, Rings, Emeralds, Swirling Checkpoints, and Super fast platforming gold. That is Sonic the Hedgehog 2, one of the most timeless Sonic games of all time. After the first Sonic game received such massive popularity and was considered the true face of SEGA, the company obviously shot for a sequel with more refined gameplay, and man did they nail it. Sonic 2 was perfect, it introduced a new character Tails (whom is now just as popular as Sonic) and with him 2 Player racing modes. On top of that, this game had even more awe-inspiring stages than the first one, and still retained the high speed gameplay that made the first one so good. Bottom line, this game is solid. It's fast, crazy, easy to pick-up-and-play, and was addictive as hell. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, all the other games just get left in the dust.
http://bloodlust.zophar.net/gen/sonic2.gif

Well, there you have it. Now that I'm finished, I think I'll go play some Klonoa: Door to Phantomile. Laters.

Oh yeah, before I leave, thank you to everyone that made this list possible, and here are all of the submissions I received. Till next time.

Arcade version would be cool. And what a surprise that sonic pulls ahead for the win in this poll! He even beat out Mario who at one time was more recognizable than Micky Mouse.

I think its bullshit that we got two final fantasy games and two zelda games on the list. We should have at least gotten one Megaman game on the list. :(

I'm also quite surprised Super Metriod didn't make it higher on the list. :o

Yeah I hear ya, I was really hoping that a Megaman game (either regular or X) would make it, since I generally like those better than the Zelda's, but this was decided by the fans, not me. I actually had very little say in it due to the fact that so few of my personal favorites made it on the top 10. Well, ok maybe 3, but the ones I really wanted to see up there (like Septerra Core which I knew was NOT going to happen, and Klonoa which I really wished might make number 10) didn't even get close.

Who knows, maybe there will be more diversity on the next topic, which I have scheduled for this Thursday.
