View Full Version : Mini Contest: Design a Favorite's Icon for PSO-World! (Ends Sept 1st!)

Jul 23, 2008, 04:15 PM
CONTEST ENDS: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2008!

Okay, it's time for a little mini contest here in Fan Works. PSO-World is in dire need of a favorite's icon (the little icon that shows up next to the web site address in your web browser). It's up to YOU to design the coolest little 16 x 16 icon that we've ever seen, keeping in mind that it should somehow tie in with PSOW, Phantasy Star, etc.

Submissions may be posted in this thread or sent to me via PM. You're welcome to use any graphics software you prefer to make the image (not that you'll need anything TOO powerful for an icon of this size), but the final image must meet the 16 x 16 pixel requirements. You might also try visiting http://www.favicon.cc/ for some icon ideas and a tool that will allow you to create your own icon.

We'll leave the submission period open for at least a week to give everyone time to complete their entry. There is no firm deadline as of yet, but I'd recommend getting your entries in sooner than later.

The winner, who will be determined by a method of our choosing, will receive a custom avatar of their choice. If you already have a custom avatar, we'll figure out another prize of equal or greater value for you ;)

Good luck and let the icons begin!

"Transparent" and not-transparent backgrounds.

Attempted to make a miniature of the big circle on PSO title screen... and shrink it down. A lot.

Red Ring. I think it looks pretty good, though it's a little pit pixeled.

The PSO red box of rareness is the most iconic thing I can think of.

The three planet thing is always the theme in Phantasy Star, right?

Well, here's three versions of the same, I have an svg (created in Inkscape) of it too, so it's easy to change ;)

Edit: adding one with the three colours of PSU.

Yeah, it's the only thing I can think of that's sort of a constant of Phantasy Star - PSO - PSU....

Some simple bare-bones hand-drawn icons. No fancy anti-aliasing here.

Standard PS symbol with colours on the little circles to match the usual planet colours, with and without shadow:

Photon blast circles, transparent and on black.

'PSOW' in PSO font; black transparent, white on accurate GC/BB colour background, white on GC/BB background with colour edit so the stripes are actually visible

Using Neobunny's red box as a base, I swapped some colors and added a bit of aliasing on the edge, plus changed around shading, highlighting. Not sure if my edits would be enough to make the work completely my own, so share credit with him.

Posted & edited with Neobunny's permission.

EDIT: Added monomate icon. This one is 100% mine!

i can make some exactly the same, i can extract some from the game, but it was alot easier this way, i may have stoped the movement or i may ajusted the size but they were all found online, there were no specification about the origin of the image, so i posted some i had.

I don't know, this is a bit vague, but I believe that it is a statement about YOU designing them.... not someone that you don't even know, let alone share rights with.....

I don't know how big of a deal this is, probably not a very big deal, but if YOU didn't design them, then it's not cool, as the opening statement says that YOU should design them....

but it may not be a rule....

it's only a big deal because it's a contest.

Edit to clarify:

From the site where you stole the icons:

Icon use agreement!!!
Please don't direct-link to icon images on our site.
A PSO icon is a free material. The used report E-mail is unnecessary.
Please link a website, when you use it

webmaster = Otsuno
Please link only to the top page.

Banners

Only the Cheracter icon of large extension is O.K.
The Cheracter icon extension range is the color change hair style of the skin, color change of hair, and animation processing.
Weapon addition. Change of the body accompanying it.
Use in the range enjoyed in an individual is possible.
Use to obtain business and profits is forbidden.
Please send a question and E-mail in Japanese or very easy English.
It cannot answer except Japanese and easy English.
I'm not good at English...Please understand the situation.

Emphasys mine. since PSOW has ad banners, it can be argued to be a commercial site, and it is not allowed by the creator (who btw used to be a registered user of psow) to use. But even if PSOW chose one of those icons, the credit can never go to DC_PLAYER, it has to be credited to Otsuno.

haruna
Sep 3, 2008, 03:09 AM
Even if you traced the icons pixel for pixel, you're still a thief. If there's absolutely no way whatsoever to distinguish your "work" from the original, you stole it. Stealing artwork is wrong, contest or not.

Aki03
Sep 3, 2008, 05:49 AM
I vote for Neobunnys Redbox ^^

BTW: where is the hard work to take the same icons and change only the size or make it without animation??? A contest without hard work makes no sense and especially to stole other peoples designs and their work is NOT cool!

thematesV2
Sep 3, 2008, 08:54 AM
Ok, mine are those, if i ever make them they would be exactly the same as the ones i posted....

here's the issue. you never made them.... you said you never made them right there. "if i ever make them they would be exactly the same....."

since you didn't make them, your out.

there are alot of questions in art about creating duplicates and copies of things, alot of artists have done it and become famous. but that was before alot of copywrite laws, and now copywrite laws cover artists and designers asses from people copying their work.

yea, everyone thinks of Andy Warhol when they see a cambels soup can, and yet no-body knows who the original illustrator or designer who designed the can's label... (i don't know who he/she was... some one should wiki or google it...)

DC_PLAYER
Sep 3, 2008, 09:32 AM
if i ever make them they would be exactly the same as the ones i posted....

Some would be different (static, no white pixels, increased size.......) so yeah, some would be different from those sites.

It's pso world decision to chose one or to have an idea to make one, if they chose i don't care, if they don't i don't care also, i'm not here to win, just to present ideas, what you do with them it's up to you, not me.

Edit, some icons have sega credit sice you can take them from the game, so not all are from Otsuno, also some are free to use ones.
Maybe you didn't read my 1st post, but i never said i was the one who made them, keep that in mind

GutsGO
Sep 3, 2008, 12:13 PM
I find it really hard to believe that you would create something EXACTLY the same as another person (and those examples you gave of being "different" don't count). It's almost impossible and I think this contest should be left to people whom actually made something themselves, in order to keep PSOW unique and original.

People like you make artists very disgusted, and contests like these hard to enjoy.

DC_PLAYER
Sep 3, 2008, 01:06 PM
What you say about me is irrelevant, those are ideas, not creations of mine.
If pso-world decide not to use them then i'm okay with it, i'm not the one building a drama here, coming here saying that these contests are hard to enjoy because of me, you make your entries, i make mine, then pso-world will decide wich ones will be acepted.
So stick to making the icons and leave the rest to the ppl that know what they are doing.

GutsGO
Sep 3, 2008, 02:43 PM
like you?
j/k
Seriously

Anyway, my point is you shouldn't even have entered those stolen designs since this is a contest after all, and Tomeeboy even said they had to be your own design.

If you want to give "ideas" to people then you should type that they are just "ideas" and some things for people to get started. All you did was post a string of them, with no explanation or anything, are we supposed to be mind readers and know that you are just trying to give us ideas? It plainly looks like those were your submissions, you got caught cheating and plagiarizing, and now you're trying to act all cool like it doesn't bother you.

You're pretty arrogant for submitting copied artwork into a contest then playing it off like you did nothing wrong. I guess you have no qualms with stealing other people's ideas and hard work, and that is the part that bothers me most. Have some respect for other people and their creations, I'm sure you'd like the same in return.

Tomeeboy
Sep 3, 2008, 04:07 PM
As the contest is now over, we'll be reviewing the submissions and trying to decide on a winner soon. To put any concerns to rest regarding contest submissions that are not original works, these do not qualify for the contest and are not eligible to win. Thanks to everyone who put the effort into creating and submitting their icons!

DC_PLAYER
Sep 3, 2008, 06:31 PM
see, my pics do not even fit in the contest so you have nothing to worry about.
If someone asked me if those were taken off a site i would say yes, but even so they would remain in the post, your the one creating a big drama over some pics not me, the pics for me are just that, pics, nothing more.
If the moderating team actually asked me if they were my creations i would say no with no fear, but even so they are submissions (invalid submissions like 17*17 icons or uncoreconizable image format, these are invalid since they were already made by someone else)
This is a simple problem not a pso drama

It works a-ok in Safari now.

I'm not a huge fan of it, I know my opinion doesn't mean much but as a graphic artist I have to speak my mind.

It doesn't have a PSO, PSU, or even old-school feel/look to it...the colors are meh, especially how the blue sphere blends with the main path circle and in general I think the spheres are too tiny. There needs to be some contrast in there and some shadows/highlights, or make the whole thing glowing like PSO's logo to give it that sci-fi'y feel.

DC_PLAYER
Oct 3, 2008, 01:01 PM
it looks great to me, for a while i tought pso-world would chese the red box one, that would be rather non PSU related and non PSO Ver.2 related.

With the typical pso logo, it actually fits in any phantasy star game. really great choice

Hey GutsGO, you make some great points. However, at 16 x 16 and as a favicon, it needs to be quite stylistc, I feel. Adding transparecy, making it glow is near impossible...

In any case, if the admins want a change, I'm happy to oblige ;) I can proved the svg, as I said earlier.

GutsGO, pixel art's a different world, if you can magically shade one half of a pixel and highlight yet another, you'd probably win some sort of Nobel Prize. Sorry if I seem pissed, some asstard at work asked if there's any way to make a pixel smaller for roughly those reasons(licensors + cell phone games = rage.)

Heck, at 16x16, I'd say SabZero should be commended for making the circles nice and round.

Inkscape still had to rasterize(fancy special case of "convert") the vectors to pixels for the .ICO format or .gif, etc.

I guess if you really wanted to mess with creating stuff pixel by pixel, grab Graphics Gale (http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/). It's free.
