View Full Version : CPS's real EpIII card game project

When the official server went down it was indeed a very sad day for PSO fans. Especially for us EpIII fans since the only solid/playable/non-buggy way to play EpIII is offline.

I have become to really miss the awesome online game play and with all the C.A.R.D. Revo changes implemented, so I have decided to take the time to make an actual REAL TCG of "Phantasy Star Online: Episode III C.A.R.D. Revolution". I know theres many people out there that think that it is impossible to recreate EpIII into an actual real TCG but a few of my friends and myself(who actually play other TCGs IRL) believe we have come up with a playable system for this EpIII TCG that can exist in the TCG world and plays just like the video game.

The project is still very early in development so I won't talk much about it until it gets closer to being finished. I will however give you all a little peek at the project with a few cards that are already finished. Enjoy

Believe it or not, there were Episode III cards made. They were included with the Sammy Keyboard Controller and came only in Japanese. All of them were Action Cards, but they had the original art as seen in the game and had all of the info needed.

I know. I have some.

I have those cards too. I actually sent an e-mail to Sega of America and asked them if there was a real TCG of EpIII released or to be released in Japan or the US because of those cards. They said they didn't have any plans to release such a thing in the future and those were promotional cards of some sort. Those promo cards helped me to decide on actually going through and making a real TCG of EpIII. Good looking out though!

Having them as a TCG would be awesome. I only have about 10, and I know that finding the remaining few will be hard.

I have about 10 unique promo cards and about 12 duplicates. Maybe we should post our duplicates to see if we can work trades to get our promo card collections complete? :)

It'd be interesting to see if there are any others.

To add a little spice and a sense of expansion, plans are being made to add both banned & beta cards to the TCG that didn't make the cut in the final version of the video game.

As of now beta cards are being labeled as E Rank. Just as all E Rank cards, only one of the same card name that is labeled as E Rank is allowed per deck. To keep game play balance, further play testing is required before we make our final decision as to if these cards will actually make it to the TCG just like the video game.

I really want to see these cards make the cut this time around, lets hope they aren't too game breaking as E Rank to make this possible. Then again there is always the possibility to conduct our own C.A.R.D. Revo for these specific cards.

Would it be possible to make them in the same format as the official ones? If not, I'm still hyped, since your format looks good too. I'm not too sure about beta cards....could you maybe put them as EE Rank?

Awesome man! If there is anyway we can help, let us know! If I were to only have one or two character cards, it would probaly be Glustar and Kylria. :D

I was actually hoping for something like this ever since I heard about episode 3. I've never actually played it (I'll probably buy a copy soon) but it seemed extremely fun.

We definitely need bosses for this. ^_^ Probably have like more than 2 vs 2 perhaps though I'm guessing there is no such thing as 'transformation'.

I think if Konami made this (Yugioh TCG) they'd do very well with your collaberation. Though, I doubt that SoA would go for it.

CPS, if you need help putting those cards together, I'm willing to help when I can. I like page design, so I could definitely improve over the ones you've posted (make it closer to the originals maybe).

Let me know! ^^

A) I really like the cards that you are making, but it would be nice to have an offical card game.
B) These kinds of cards would be for a Card/Board game hybrid. Having ranges actually adds to the gameplay. Even though it is a bit late, it would be nice to see these being made. The US seems to be at a lack of good TCGs lately. Yu-Gi-Oh is slowly going into the so-expansive-its-just-stupid category and .hack//ENEMY was extremely short lived. Its time for a new TCG, even if it is from something old.

This is a cool idea! A very cool idea!

Was there not an un-official Phantasy Star CCG on the net about 8 years ago? I swear there was a site with a bunch of cards and rules at it was either before PSO released on Dreamcast or about the same time. Definitely years before the Episode III game.

I have a selection of some of the original physical cards. I got a selection in a Hori Memory card, plus some others from somewhere, think it was when I got the beta for PSOep3..not sure.

Wasnt there a full deck that you could buy from Sega direct? I remember seeing it at the time, but regretfully never got around to buying it :(

Haven't posted in a long while. I'm sorry to say the original project was canned due to the loss of my old PCs hard drive ; ; That and real life priorities stopped me from continuing. Sorry I never got to finish the game, it was turning out pretty good.

These days I spend my time on PSZ if anyone wishes to join my online sessions. Skype enforced. :D

I WAS ABLE TO RECOVER THE FILES FROM MY OLD LAPTOPS HDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After a few hours of trying to get it to work without crashing...

So the project can potentially continue at this point. We might have to adjust the gameplay and cards a bit after running into some annoying inconveniences with our current build. Nothing that we can't handle as experienced TCG players though.

Now I just gotta find the time to fit this into my busy schedule...

Not to step on any toes... but I can't believe this thread is still kickin'. Not that it's a bad thing. Should be fun.

But how about a PC based game? That way I can... you know... play with other people....

I would definitely look into a cloud-based storage solution. Dropbox being the most popular, gives you 2 gigs of storage for free. It'll certainly protect the files in the future from this sort of thing. I lurked this topic way back when as well, and as a big fan of Ep III in general, I'd love to see this move forward.

Haven't posted here in a while. While play testing we ran into a lot of problems with certain card abilities and had to make changes to them or in some cases remove them completely. This caused us to start from square 1 and completely change the way the game was played. The project got put on hold when I joined a certain private server's EPIII debugging team ;p and will probably never get finished. This is way too much work for 1 person and now that I started my own company I barely have any free time. So with all said I'm going to officially cancel the project just so many of you don't continue to wait. I noticed somebody else started working on making a TCG so hopefully they can iron out all the bugs we ran into and get it finished(granted they have the time).

To stray off topic my development team recently started playing together in offline battles again. Being that I work in video gaming tournaments, I know a lot about live streaming since we stream a lot of our events. I'm planning to either record or start an EpIII live streaming channel of some high level play. When I work this all out I'll drop the details.

This thread can now be closed :)
