Keyboard?

Is there any way to hook up a dc or usb keyboard to a gc? I heard about people testing it by splicing together a dc keyboard and a gc extension cable. Is this possible and even safe for the gc from an electrical standpoint?
If this isn't possible, where is the best place to buy an ascII keyboard controller?. I live in Texas so i'm looking for a place that would ship to the US or is based in the US.
