Lost Items

My neighbor comes over and plays PSO with my brother and I every day, and today he was playing with my brother... after they were done, they pushed quit/save, but halfway through the save, my impatient neighbor turned off the GC... anyhow, my neighbor lost everything (except his character), but my brother lost nothing... I am curious... why did this happen this way? was it because my brother was Player 1? An act of God? Does anyone have any idea?

I think he lost all the items because it destroyed the temp data on the memory card, that holds your items and exp gained while playing there but no the char stats that more concrete then the items.
