Two favorite game series are Phantasy Star and Quest for Glory.

Also, Gabriel Knight should get special mention. Jane Jenson is the best storyteller and atmosphere crafter in the videogame industry. Period. Can't wait to see what she does with Grey Matter.

Top 5? I think Ive played too many videogames to have just a top 5 anymore... well
in no order by any means
Choplifter- when I first played this game in the arcade it was the first time that I not only shot stuff, but was responsible for the lives of hostages on my helicopter while I did it. It had a very profound effect on me as a gamer and I knew that games were more than just a fad. It also lead to me getting a Sega Master system for the home version of this game in 86 and of course that eventually lead to my love affair with the Phantasy Star series.
Radiant Silvergun- never had more fun with a shoote,r gradius series, thunder force series and gaires come close though.
Street Fighter 2- I used to go to the arcade to play the original Street fighter with the 2 big punch buttons then part 2 came out and Ive never seen a more significant leap in gameplay since. It influenced more than just other fighting games. Did you know the 2 in 1 combo system in SF was originally a bug that the programmers left inbecause it improved gameplay? It also lead to my other fave fighter the Virtua Fighter series.
Gunstar Heroes- It out contra'd Contra and I LOVE Contra. and it spawned the over the top "prequel" Guardian heroes. If you like castle crashers you should be hanging your head in shame for not playing this game.
Shining Force- (series) Its chess like simplicity is why I prefered this strategy RPG series over all others The fights were intense the story was decent (especially 3) and the music was good. Its the reason I got into games like Disgea. I wish Shining force would go back to what I loved about it in the first place.
Well this by no means is Far and away my top 5 but these games are among the mosst influential in my progress as a gamer. I didn't need to mention Phantasy Star because if I didn't absolutely love Phantasy Star I wouldn't be on this forum :P
And special mention Goes out to Panzer dragoon, all of them.
