I like a select amount of metal, it just can't be a really boring song (Tool).

Opinion =/= fact.

I like a select amount of metal, it just can't be a really boring song (Tool).I'm speaking from a purely technical standpoint, not trying to be snobby, but I know a fair amount about music, being both a guitarist and pianist for about seven years now and in a band of my own. Whether or not something is music is not opinion-based (or at least it should never be). I do listen to Opeth, but only because they have a lot of melodic elements and musically are incredibly talented, i.e. all of Damnation...

P.S. Tool isn't metal at all. Mayhem is.

I play an instrument as well (drums) and I'm still a little hesitant to tell someone that their music isn't music.

On Opeth: Listening to them now. :D Even though Lopez isn't their drummer any more, he's still one of my current inspirations. I think he has separate brains for each one of his limbs. -_-

I have nothing against any kind of music because people can like what they wanna like (that's what it's all about), but metal fan fights are the best. I witnessed something like the following on PSN Home last night:

HOW DARE U ******* SAY THAT SLIPKNOT IS ****. I WILL COME OVA THAR AND **** YOU UP, YOU DBAG

Mainly listening to (and don't give me 'baawwwww that's not metal', because I couldn't care less when the genre is so widely blown apart):

Spoilered incase it turns out to be a huge list...this is just what's mainly on my playlist lately though.
[spoiler-box]
Anarchy Club (Yeah, the band in Guitar Hero/Rock Band- I actually legally own their album and their EP though  Waiting for 'The Art of War' to release in 2009.)
Bullet For My Valentine (Minus the I <3 [insert band member name] Myspace culture part)
Disturbed (Not a huge fan of their older stuff, but Indestructible was admittedly a pretty decent album)
Dream Theater (Prog-metal? I'm HUGE on DT at the minute. I heard In The Name of God a while back, and got hooked. Now I can't stop listening to them...)
Iron Maiden (Huge, huge Maiden fan)
Judas Priest (Painkiller, 'nuff said.)
Lacuna Coil (Christina Scabbia is 1) extremely hawt 2) blessed with a nice voice to back it up. I just wish they'd ditch the backup singer, he seems...pointless.)
Manowar (What's NOT to love? )
Megadeth (Rust In Peace is one of the best albums EVER.)
Metallica (Oldschool- mainly Kill 'Em All/Ride The Lightning/...And Justice For All period)
Nine Inch Nails (I know, not exactly metal- awesome though.)
Slayer (weeee Thrash)
Stratovarius

Although, I gotta say that my favourite song lately is either 'These Walls' by Dream Theater, or 'Bye Bye Beautiful' by Nightwish.[/spoiler-box]

I don't label myself a "metalhead" as I don't think a genre of music should represent or label me. However, I've been listening to thrash, black, grindcore, and death metal for about 10 years now, and still loving it. Even just posting the names to some of my favorite bands would be very inappropriate to PSOW, so I'll just post an awesome drum video from one.

I've listened to Megadeth and Slayer for a while, so it's not that I'm new to metal or anything, it's just my tastes are quite diverse within the genre.

I still think Megadeth's 'Sleepwalker' has some of the funniest lyrics ever put into a song. Tornado of Souls has to be one of my favourite tracks from them though.

Edit: That Hammerfall song is decent too (the one posted above).

I think I should get into Testament more- I've liked what I've heard so far.

LMAO..Oh man, you're good XD

Also definitely love Hearts of Fire.

Hammerfall really lives up to my idea of "neo-Maiden"

Also Neith, like your picks.

I'm a metalhead myself but I hate when people who have no idea what they are fucking talking about start trying to label things as metal or not like they are better than you. (OMFG METALLICA RUINED MUSIC NOT METAL ROFLFOLOLOL)

@ Kylie's post: Yeah, Slipknot is definitely metal, people need to get the fuck over it, even their drummer is good and their older stuff isn't too bad, even if the guitar riffs are mainly them scratching the strings against walls

New BfmV is awesome, Dream Theater is amazing and...Stratovarious..perhaps one of the most beautiful neoclassical metal bands around..the technicallity of the guitar is SICK! (Not to mention the rest of the band has amazing talent)

I LOVE Moon's picks though, Kamelot and SA ftw! (Been getting tired of Studioforce after hearing them live though XD) Definitely love the prog/power-metal/speed metal :D. I've been experimenting more into melodeath and black metal with symphonic elements etc, however.

Also, i DO like other music too, so yeah.

On Slipknot: Hopefully I won't incite any riots, but while Slipknot is metal, I think a lot of the metal "purists" don't want it to be. Slipknot is most commonly classified as nu metal, which IMO is terrible. But hey, there are other types of metal I don't like as well.

QFT

Big fan of death metal, namely melodic death metal. I was raised on classical such as Chopin and Rachmaninoff and etc. so I still yearn for that full sound that classical music brings and melo death seems to fill that role with amazing riffs and structuring. Neoclassical metal would fit it, especially since I love guitar and play it, but sometimes you need something... more.

That doesn't stop me from liking other things non-metal, but for the most part that's what my albums and mp3s are. Some types of metal I don't really like (or listen to on a whim) are black, nu, hardcore, post hardcore, and power metal. Pretty picky with those.

Some of my favorite bands are (with links provided for cool songs. Assorted types of metal. Check them out if you're looking for new stuff to listen to! Spoiler boxed for being hueg leik xbawkz):

Dissection is good if I'm thinking of the right band; melodeath right?

Some of my favorite in that department would be CoF (Don't kill me) Chtonic, Amon Amarth, In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Etc.

Yes, this is the Satyricon I had to get used to, mainly because I think Nemesis Divina is their best album and it's SO different from what they do now. But the "new" Satyricon isn't so bad after I listened to it a couple of times. It seems it's more like extreme metal than black metal.

Oh ok XD..

They don't sound the same if you listen to it a lot.

I used to think they were all practically the same when I was just a casual rock/alternative listener, but now I can appreciate the technicality and difficulty and beauty (as hard as some of you might find that to believe) to this music.

That's why I love Classical, all though it's not something you exactly go around bumpin' in your car too. ;O

I love metal, but I have a broader sense of the word than the average person. I love 80's metal (aka hair, glam, etc). I love modern metal like pantera and slayer, and system of a down. I also love some of the newer stuff like dragonforce. Randy Rhoads is the best, he carried Ozzy initially. (R.I.P.) :(

P.S. Forgive me, but I have to post a pic of Randy for those that don't know him. Sorry

Never heard of them.

I did like Randy Rhoads a lot, but I think Ozzy has always been good.

However, I did still like the music after unlike most people.
