I reformat rather often because I change hardware a lot and I am going to reformat soon for the arrival of my new Phenom build and I was wondering if I have to backup my online chars or not? Thanks ^^

Your online characters are stored on Sega's servers. So when their servers go down for good in the future, they're lost forever.

So there's no reason to worry about backing up character data.

It would be against the ToS if it were possible client side and stored somewhere in the install file folders, too.

Reformat as much as you need to, without worry. Simply install the game again if needed each time and log in with your same password and you're back to where you were.
