By default, this game only has local multiplayer, so it is free to play. Online play is possible through the PS3 or XLink Kai.

Also, Sega *won't* prevent hackers because Sega isn't hosting game servers for Phantasy Star Portable.

There is no official online play other than downloading content. Unofficial online play is possible via other tunneling services such as XLink Kai at the moment.

Very true. However, it's the fact that whether you tunnel or not, the actual host is the person with the PSP that decided to be the host. There are no host servers maintained by SEGA to charge a monthly fee for. Not for this game, at least. It's pretty much the same thing with Phantasy Star Zero.
