I don't know how many people here play Touhou, but a 12th game is in the works, I just downloaded the demo, and I'm liking it so far, they fixed the bombing system, so it's more like the older ones, Sanae is a playable character as well. I haven't toyed with it too much, seeing as I'm a bit sleep deprived at the moment, so have have a yootoob and some screenshots.

Aww, I thought you were talking about me in the shadows for a minute...

Heh, j/k, but yea, this game looks like fun, so if I remember I'll have to download it, and even though I haven't played touhou since Perfect Cherry Blossom, I was pleased with that game, so let's wait and see :D

The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Imperishable Night, and Immaterial and Missing Power all have English patches that you can download from links on their individual pages on this wiki (http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Touhou_Wiki), I'm not sure when the other games will have finished patches, I don't think anyone intends to do one for Phantasmagoria of Flower View, due to it's unpopularity and the amount of dialogue in it.

Even the untranslated ones, you can still wade through rather easily since the games are shooters.

Edit: There's apparently a partial patch for Subterranean Animism as well, but when I tried it the game was still in Japanese, so I don't know what's up with it.

That boss in the last two screens seems to have some funny attacks.
ZUN seems a bit out of ideas for bosses with broken powers, though.
I mean, in previous games, you get to fight the Goddess of Curses and an OMG powerful oni who can fight you without dropping her sake, and here I've heard the first or second stage boss has the power to surprise people?! Come on~ :p

Might try it, nonetheless.
I'd just like to know how the difficulty is compared to the other ones, in your opinion.
Even though I'm a big touhou doujin music circles whore, I have yet to try a 'real' Touhou game.
The only one I'm playing so far is Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, which is stupidly easy even on Lunatic when you combine grazing with spam of the same attack over and over.

Just because you suck at it doesn't mean it's bad.

As for difficulty, I'm not sure if I'm just rusty or if it's up to the same difficulty range as 10 and 11, been a while since I played those. Definitely harder than 5-8 though, Imperishable Night has the easiest easy mode, so if you're new to the genre you might wanna ease in with that. Don't bother with easy mode on Perfect Cherry Blossom, it's not much easier than normal, meaning it's not that easy, not the reverse.

Two questions:

What is with Japan and their fascination with anime, and anything cutesy? Plus, gigantic eyes and little mouths. 8D

Why do all these games have such stupid names?

Yeah I know what to expect, I have seen most of the games in action (even Phantasm stage in PCB), but I only watched, not actually played them myself.
Knowing myself, I'll be stubborn enough to try any of them by skipping Easy to go right on Normal. I like to inflict myself pain.
Or maybe I'll try Subterranean Animism since it got infinite continues (or it seemed so at least), but on Easy, because Utsuho's nukes are looking pretty sick to me.

5-8 let you continue from where you died on continue, but you won't get to save your replay, 10-12 make you start the level over if you get a game over.

Why do all these games have such stupid names?

1) Why do we not have such a fascination? Simply a culture difference.

2) They are approximate translations, which is hard to do with a language that has a completly different alphabet system.

Personally im not a fan of Bullet-Hell shooters. My biggest problem is that its less about thinking on the fly, more on patter memorization, well, pattern memorization if you want to be any good at least.

But then again thats why I have such a problem with rhythm games as well.

the game looks good. i can't wait for it even though
i'm bad at this game. hopefully the music in this game
are good. i love most of the previous games music.
I was kind of hoping there would be more new main characters
or even the old ones like Yukari or Remilia added instead of
Reimi & Marisa; they're like in every touhou games. >>;

Actually, the English parts of the names are not translations of the game names. They're part of the titles.

Example, I'll use Perfect Cherry Blossom.

東方妖々夢 ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom
Touhou Youyoumu ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom
Touhou Bewitching Dream ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom

Another, UFO.

東方星蓮船 ~ Undefined Fantastic Object
Touhou Seirensen ~ Undefined Fantastic Object
Touhou Star-Lotus Ship ~ Undefined Fantastic Object

It's just how ZUN has named his games ever since Highly Responsive to Prayers.

Look at the date of your post and compare it to the one before you. I'm wondering if you actually had to go to pg 2 to find this topic...

I can agree with you on that point, which is probably why I'm so drawn towards Touhou 09 - PoFV. Its a split-screen danmaku game where you face off against either a human opponent or a CPU. While the special/boss attacks are always the same, how they interact with the spontaneously appearing bullets will always be different. There is no greater pattern to learn - you can learn how to avoid the components but when they are put together they become an entirely different beast, ever changing and often insanely difficult (like it should be, heheh).

And it also has a versus mode! :)

I've not really checked out #12 in the series so far, though I think that I'll hold off and wait for the official release. I hope that it'll feature some more good musical pieces like its prequels have. I also hope that Sikieiki will make an appearance in it, although that is probably not too likely..

My Favorite was always Imperishible Night. The final stage was drop dead gorgeous in my opinion. I always wanted Flandre Scarlet as a main playable character. Her theme song is a top favorite of mine. My friend Vanessa is a freaking Touhou Otaku. She even bought a few minitures of Marisa, Reimu, and her absolute favorite Yukari Yakumo. With both costumes. Oh and Cirno to. I think she has a t-shirt that has Cirno on it and it says "The Strongest T-Shirt" underneath her. On the back it has the big (9) symbol on the back. As for #12 I'm psyched. I'd love to play the demo yet I have 0 clue where to find it. I love Touhou. Why no major game company picked it up is beyond me. But then again I can see G4 ripping it a new one because its not next-gen nor does it have voice actors or come with multi-player,adhoc,deathmatch arena DOOM mode with Spartan laser.

ZUN is why. ZUN does NOT want this series to become mainstream, or whatever you wanna say here.

As it stands, and I'm surprised he hasn't yet, I'm expecting him to take a year or two break from making any games... Pretty soon, possibly after UFO. The series as-is is more popular than he wants it to be, and he may give it a couple of years to cool down. That's the exact reason why there was a break in between 9.5-StB and 10-MoF.

Edit:

To reword, or rephrase...

ZUN doesn't like that, in actuality, it's the music and doujin that is getting more attention than his own games. He doesn't want that. Or something. ...I dunno, I'm off track of whatever I was trying to say now.
