I can't seem to set hotkeys - BB - PC

Hey guys, I have a noob question, I know, but I don't know where else to turn.

I'm trying to play Blue Burst, and I have an option to set hotkeys for keyboard 1-0. I have it set so keyboard controls are on. I do play with a controller plugged in to move and use the action pad.

-I've tried highlighting the item and pressing the button I want to assign it to
-I've tried selecting the item, but there's no assign option
-I've tried highlighting the item in the quick select menu and pressing the button I want it assigned to
-I've tried selecting the item/spell in the quick select menu and hitting the assigned button

None of these have worked. Please, any suggestions?

umm well normally the way its done is,

u go to customize<
<you click on any random slot<
<then it takes u to the menu where everything is displayed<
<u then move the cursor or whatever using to the one u want<
<then u hit the key once<

but since u already did this, idk try holding it down maybe. umm do u have a generic keyboard? or some hella ghenkay dope ghetto keyboard????

Step 1: Go to customize.
Step 2: Go have your curser over whatever you want to assign.
Step 3: Click the number you want to assign it to (NOT the number pad)
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit!!!
