I heard that if you go offline and then unwrap it, you are safe to reset, which will cause the present to go back to being wrapped when you next load up the game. I haven't tried it myself, so don't get mad at me if it doesn't work. I'm just telling you what I heard. Can anyone verify this?

It's called soft reseting, I've done it a thousand times it's totally safe. Just take the present and use it, if it's not the cell you want just hit the reset button on your GC and do it again. You can even bank all your other things before hand if It'll make you feel safer.

Doesn't it automatically save when you press reset, or is that just online? I used this method to get what i wanted out of my christmas present, but i just hit the power button.

That's just online. Offline hitting reset will take you back to the title screen without saving.
