Once online how do you start?

So I joined a game with some people in it but they just stood there talking and when I tried talking to the orb thingie that sends you out on missions nothing happened. Did I have to group up with them or something or what?

So normally I just talk to the orb thingie and go kill stuff?

If you join a party, you always have to wait for the party leader to select a mission before you can "go kill stuff."
