I live in Osaka, but I'm an American, and I plan to get the American version of PSO soon. Since I'll probably be playing on the Japanese servers, is it possible to set the language to Japanese and use Japanese characters so that I can at least communicate without having "shitai" be censored?

I'm pretty sure you can go to the Options screen and change your language.

Actually, you can do exactly that. If you buy the US version, and set the language to Japanese, not only does the soft keyboard become japanese AND english, but a hardware keyboard (US) can be used, and the game automatically converts recognized romanized syllables into hiragana! Only problem is I don't know how to type in regular english with the language set to Japanese http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_frown.gif

Thanks to both of you guys. Tetsunokage, I wonder if that question about how to revert back to Japanese is a question for Sega. I'll tell you this, here in Japan, most of the keyboards have an extra key next to the Windows key that has the two kanji 'EISUU' (meaning English ASCII codes) on it. Maybe in Japanese mode, it appears on the soft keyboard?

Also, Tetsunokage, can you type in katakana by holding down shift while typing? That's the way we do it on keyboards here usually. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_wink.gif
And we can usually use kanji by typing the first character in capitals and the rest lowercase. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks... sorry to bug you.

Hmm, Is this "eisuu" key also mapped to the US keyboards? like for the s1, s2, or s3 key? I tried pressing those but I still type in kana. It's frustrating pressing shift for the start of each english word and enter when you end the word..bleh.

Well, I just discovered something interesting. I went to a Japanese gaming store and discovered the JAPANESE DREAMCAST KEYBOARD. In addition to the S1, S2, and S3 keys, it also has an extra key between the "S1, S2, S3" keys and the spacebar with EISUU on it. I may have to buy a Japanese keyboard if I want to use kanji and kana at the same time I use romaji, because one key shifts back to romaji. I'm not sure if this works on an American Dreamcast. Also, the keyboard is 4000 yen. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif

Try pressing the capslock key or the shift key one time before typing and tell me if you have any success with kanji/katakana on the American keyboard... its price is much, much better.

why won't you play on U.S servers?
