OK, seriously, the goverment got to be kidding us.

I just found this on a Deviantart journal:

THIS IS NOT ABOUT PIRACY.
THIS IS ABOUT PRIVACY.

Everyone on a computer will be monitored of their progress. No more privacy at all for anybody. NOPE.

- ISPS will now watch what you download, and tattle on you if you download a music track/ any data / rapidshares / torrents etc.
- ISPS will tattle on you, when you do anything which goes against "Governments policy".
- ISPS will be able to document and store EVERYTHING you do online. nothing will ever be private again

--

Potential border searches are covered by the "Border Measures" proposal of ACTA. As of February 2009 and according to University of Ottawa law professor Michael Geist there is significant disagreement among countries on this topic: "Some countries are seeking the minimum rules, the removal of certain clauses, and a specific provision to put to rest fears of iPod searching customs officials by excluding personal baggage that contains goods of a non-commercial nature. The U.S. is pushing for broad provisions that cover import, export, and in-transit shipments."[42] Newspaper reported that the draft agreement would empower security officials at airports and other international borders to conduct random ex officio searches of laptops, MP3 players, and cellular phones for illegally downloaded or "ripped" music and movies. Travellers with infringing content would be subject to a fine and may have their devices confiscated or destroyed.

--

New link has been added with the following information:

"Canadian officials travel to Guadalajara, Mexico this week to resume negotiations on the still-secret Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. The discussion is likely to turn to the prospect of supporting three strikes and you’re out systems that could result in thousands of people losing access to the Internet based on three allegations of copyright infringement. Leaked ACTA documents indicate that encouraging the adoption of three-strikes - often euphemistically described as “graduated response” for the way Internet providers gradually send increasingly threatening warnings to subscribers - has been proposed for possible inclusion in the treaty."

--

****. No. I know nobody is going to want this ****.
So what can you do?

You can start by spreading the word. This isn't some ****ing chain mail, this **** is serious.

They're going to monitor EVERYONE AND THEIR PRIVACY WILL BE GONE. And I don't want to log into my computer and see that someone is watching me.

ALERT EVERYONE.

Tell as many people as you can. This needs as much attention as it can get! This is a SERIOUS CRISIS. They need to know we are here, and they need to know that we won't stand for it! People who are completely innocent can be subject to this. Even if you haven't downloaded a SINGLE file illegally EVER, they WILL target you. No one is safe.

DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN.
THE FUTURE OF EVERYTHING YOU DO ON THE INTERNET DEPENDS ON YOU TELLING AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND DESTROYING ACTA.

WE'LL BE KEEPING YOU UPDATED WITH MORE INFORMATION.

And I'm not stopping until people start joining in, this minimum amount is ridiculous.

Using a Deviant Art journal as a source discredits this all together.

The use of asterisks and caps locks tells me that this chain letter.

Also most of the links are broken.

C-c-c-combo breaker!

But in all seriousness, aside from the obvious hyperbole at work in that post, it's pretty obvious it's not entirely true since the entirety of the internet hasn't exploded in rage. (More importantly, Slashdot/Wired/etc. aren't reporting on this every five seconds.)

When I first read the post, I thought, "When did PSOW get a spam email checker extension for Yahoo?"

Then I realized it was Off Topic.

It's simple: People are unaware of what's going on.

P.S.: The links worked for me.

Even if you don't live in the USA (US), Japan (J), Canada (Can), New Zealand (NZ), Australia (Aus), Mexico (Mex/MX), Morocco (Mor), the European Union (EU), Singapore (Sing), South Korea (Kor), Switzerland (CH), you should care because this will spread worldwide after it passes these countries and even if it does not it will indirectly affect you.

A repost of whatever this person posted, which the user on this other site joined this year, and has three posts. Not to mention the topic is locked. Hardly any people on the forum itself, being formed recently. Looks like a lot of tinfoil hatting.

http://acta.us.to/ Keep this page open at all times! The more people have it open, the higher chance even more people are able to see it when they google search!IP's won't agree to this, because it will ruin their business. No one is going to have an internet provider that tracks their every move. Qwest was one company who didn't want something close to this happen back in 2008 (I believe). Also, the site seems to update every couple of seconds.

We have to do something. The link to the original journal: http://id-boomer.deviantart.com/journal/33468945/SEND THIS TO 15 PEOPLE IN 15 MINUTES OR YOU WILL HAVE BAD LUCK FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. Again, this guy didn't write this.

Also, one of the things that made me laugh.

I don't know about Canada and Mexico, but here in America, it's just plain unconstitutional. It may stop the pirates, but AT WHAT COST? The government will be able to view important personal information downloaded from banks and similar places.

I think I know one of the real reasons behind this law;

PORN.

If this law goes through, the President will be able to watch all of the pr0nz the millions of perverted men in the continent download, and for free. Do we really want that?

Also, a major flaw with this plan; The government's computers will not only be tracking all of the hentai and credit card numbers, they will also get EVERY LAST VIRUS ON THE INTERNET, which risks deleting important records which really are important to National security.

In adittion, WE ALREADY KNOW WHERE THE PIRATES ARE. Just shut down the torrent sites, especially the one explicitly labeled THE PIRATE BAY.
ISP's are able to track what you do regardless of the government. Every moment of every day, SOMEONE IS WATCHING YOU. Google's been doing it your whole life. (http://www.cracked.com/article_18540_5-reasons-you-should-be-scared-google.html)

Nobody's going to read any of those if by intimidating someone with 15 links without prefacing what's in it or grabbing important quotesies~ then a link to full article.

I can tell you this though:

I'm not shocked by this because it's a given... I saw it coming a long time ago. The internet provides too much freedom and anonymity, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it is worrisome for governments and businesses. It's the Internet's destiny to be fully monitored and regulated.

Besides, most people use Facebook, therefore surrendering a lot of their privacy anyway.

Well, whatever it takes to make you feel like you're special.

Don't worry, slugger. You'll probably grow out of the "internet crazy" phase of your life before long.

This is- ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!

The hyperbole, the hyperbole!

No really, the notion that something, someone, someday is trying to control the internet, is pretty old news.
It's incredibly difficult, unless you control every server on a planet. Doable, but if you can pull that of you may as well go 1984 on whole Earth, not just computer users.

Besides, while internet offers some measure of privacy, it's not absolute, as many, many people had found out through it's history.

What you do on internet leaves traces. Not matter how small, they're there and they can be found. It was like this and will continue to be.

Bad scare and chainmail attempts are bad.

Its kinda funny, some would instantly hyperbole to "hilarious" that its being spammed around the big community sites deviantart and probably that facebook too, but as shown Myspace/Facebook - their "privacy" is always a bust!

When some hubbub went about your "likes will be put on the front page collecting everything about you for friends to quick see" everyone got up in arms about it, even as devs said it was nothing that couldn't all be seen before, just now compressed and allocated easier.

They had to damage control to "allow" it with option, and after they did, less than 10% of the people complaining actually followed thru with the privacy option. The book I read about social web development, said it was really about choice, but more it was about lemmings - since facebook in other ways makes you lose your E-privacy. then their only damage control is to make it a choice, but if your "friends" don't then other people see your stuff anyway. Thanks, friends!

In terms of privacy I think more information should be put on the Internet. The net is getting to be an extention of reality, so it should be thought of more as a community rather than something like 4chan where anyone can be a douche under the gyze of anominity.

As for piracy, I think that companies should be getting at more the causes for piracy and try to elimate them. CD's and DVD's were a big target before because the distribution was so horrible. Why would I drive to rent a movie which could only possibly be carried in store and then have to drive back to return it when I can download it for free right now? With netflicks, iTunes, the AppStore, google getting in on online tv and other movements it seems like the need for piracy has greatly diminished.
