I know you can load PAL PSO on a US GameCube using the FreeLoader. But can you go online? A friend of mine just bought the PAL edition of PSO and his 'cube is the American model.

He said he can play offline but whenever he tries to go online it "freezes". Since I can't check his problem, does anyone know if this is possible?

Yes, it works. I have a JP 'cube (modded) a JP BBA and a US PSO and I can play online without problems.

Regarding my friend: I can only guess that

OR Sega detects somehow the use of FreeLoader and forbids players to go online

OR my friend was just unlucky and he'll be able to go online the day the online European service will officially start (was it March 7, right?).

It works but it's a bit twisted !!
You have to create the network config on a PAL GC with all your personal parameters on a memory card.
Then you put your memory card on your NTSC GC and go online!!
It works on my modde NTSC GC with the PAL PSO and the PAL BBA http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Probably because when sega loads the browser it blanks the GameCubes memory which wipes out any of the freeloader code.

That is indeed it. It might also have to do with the PAL version dropping into 50Hz mode for the browser, and coming back up to 60Hz when you go back to the game.
