I heard about this a while ago in Maximum PC magazine. They were talking about the future of broad bands. There was this and satalite/zepplin(I think it was some sort of derigiable) BB that had 10GB trans speeds. Too bad it won't be commercialy availible for years though http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

They should make fiber optic everything....

Fiber optic cars- go 6,800 miles in less than a minuet

Fiber optic books- read 6,800 pages in less than a minuet

Fiber optic toothbrush- brush 6'800 teeth in less than a minuet

It sure does put the Cybersonic toothbrush to shame

Man, that's goign to be extremely expensive when it hits the market.

My thoughts exactly. Would be great to have it though. I just recently got a cable modem and was amazed at that, and this thing is way faster.

well, being the computer major i am, gotta throw some things in.

first of all, like the others said, gonna be a nice chunk of change (adsl right now is almost, if not over, $100)

second, it's gonna take a while for any isp to pick it up and use that kind of transfer technology (cat 5e network cable, usually the standard ethernet cable, can send/recieve up to a gig of data easily, but no support released yet, too costy for isps)

but anyways, will be nice when they do make it commercial http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_beer.gif

Could transfer a DVD in under a minute? They're certainly being coy as to what all that bandwidth will be most likely used for O_o

RIAA surrenders

Damn, that's fast.

To bad it would cost so much money if it ever did get released for isp's to use.

Fiber optics is supposed to be in the works already. However, broadband companies keep dragging their feet, since laying down thousands upon thousands of mile of new cable is not exactly cheap. They keep squeezing a little bit more out of copper cables.

And even when they do start laying down the fiber optics, they are just going to do the main structure like that. They will splice fiber optic and copper wires into people's houses. So although the data will get to the front yard quickly, it slows down once it hits that copper wire.

Oh well. Commercially, it wouldn't be that fast anyways.

I heard that all the fiber-optic lines have already been laid. The different T connections are fiber-optic, just capped off.

My thoughts EXACTLY. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif Warez freaks are gonna LOVE this...
Course, so will us gamers. Ping times of 50ms are gonna seem like playing a 30 player game of Quake 3 over a 32k connection compared to connections with this thang. Sign me up!

The ping will border on precognition. You'll have killed someone before you even THOUGHT of it!

I'll PWNZ you all with my -12 ping of DOOM! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_ak.gif

Seriously though, I wonder what kinda ping times you'd get from that? I assume it'd still depend on distance and hops and all that bolderdash, but it'd sure be crazy to have packed games with, say, 10ms pings on each player or something. Is that feasible? Sure be nice, at least.

(And THINK of all the porno! THE PORNO!)

Hmm US broadband must be quite a bit different to UK. Our cable already involves fiber optics to the street then using copper cable to bring it into the house.

Also not sure how good pings are in the US but we get like 10-15ms average pings here.

The pings would HAVE to be in the negatives. It will come out right when I get broadband, hah...

Also not sure how good pings are in the US but we get like 10-15ms average pings here. Well, it depends for me... I can get pings of less than 20 in really local servers with very few people on 'em, but generally I get around 50ms or so, which is extremely smooth for most games.
Playing on, say... a Japanese server on the other hand gets me around 150ms or so. Bleh.
