I just started out and it seems my specialty is ranged weapons...
In the early game, is melee just as good as range weapons even though its my specialty?
Should I use range exclusively now?

Range weapons will eventually become weaker and weaker in comparison to striking weapons; for now, your best bet is to take advantage of the Handgun. ^^;

so I am mainly a support character?
and I should be using a sword+handgun vs 2 handed rifle?

Nah, Rifle only becomes good at around ~LV30; for now, the Handgun is powerful enough to get rid of enemies very quickly, so you'll save time without needing to run up to them.
You're a Cast right? If you want to support a party, switch to Twin Handguns and building very large chains. You should take up a Spear/Twin Swords/Dual Daggers/or Double Saber (when you can).

I basically use all striking except Grenade Launchers. I don't know, those things are just too awesome.
