I just found a Frozen Shooter. The Tekker always has it as 0%/0%/-5 -> 10%/0% and lists no Hit at all. does this mean, no matter how many times I tek it, it will never have Hit % on it? and does that mean I can only get % in Machine?

never really payed attention to Tekked %s before but now Im trying to get the gist of it.

Correct. You can only get %s in areas that are not 0 on the untekked item. If I'm reading it correctly, yes, the only % it can have after tekking is Machine.

Tekking 101:

look at the %s the weapon has when it drops - it must have 5% or more in an area for that % to change while tekking

this % can be changed by -10, -5, 0, +5, or +10 (you will want +10 if it's a weapon worth its salt)

for instance a weapon that drops with something such as 0/15/5/10 then that weapon can be tekked down to 0/5/-5/0 or up to 0/25/15/20

if you tek a % down to 0, then it will count as having 0% in that area (so you can't tek a % down to 0 and be able to sphere somewhere else - you still have dark, it's just 0%)

so looking back to our 0/15/5/10 weapon, if you tek it to anything other than 0/25/15/20, then it's "mistekked" since it wasn't tekked to max

!! HOWEVER !! in some cases it may not be fully worth it to max tek a weapon

say we have a weapon that drops like this: 35/0/0/30

if you +10 it, it comes up to 45/0/0/40, which is okay, but if it's something that you'd sphere, then you'll end up with this (assuming one sphere in each area):

75/0/0/70

the 70 in dark can be filled with another single sphere, which is just 99 PDs and a few nags from Pagi. the 75 on the other hand must be patched up in increments of 5%, which will actually cost you 100 PDs, and a lot more time. if you tek it like this:

40/0/0/35

you will then end with this after a single sphere in each:

70/0/0/65

The 65 dark can be patched up with 20 PDs easy, and then you can just sink two spheres into each % to get them to nice even 100s. it's slightly more expensive, but it's a lot less annoying.

so basically, tekking?

time consuming? yes
very annoying? yes
ultimately worth it in the end? depends entirely on the weapon and the %s

seeeegaaaa

^ Thanks for the great guide!

btw, has there been a consensus as to the meaning behind the tekker "chime"? Does it signify optimal tek? ie. optimal photon percentages?

The chime was looked into a while ago, and it was concluded that it's just a random occurrence.

i rememeber that chime experiment everyone went into. kinda of a shame it just ended up being a random occurence.

That was anti-climactic >_< but thanks!
