The website says it all.

The free period runs from November 30th - December 27th. December 27th is also the final day of the servers.

Indeed, a sad moment, PSO officially is put to rest after 10 years with these news.

The plans for the final month of PSOBB Japan are as follows, according to the official website:
November 29: subscriptions (30 days and auto-renewal) are discontinued, no new accounts can be created from this point on

November 30 to December 27: server becomes free to play

December 14 to December 27: rare item drop rate x10, rare enemy rate x5, EXP x2

December 27 (16:00): server shutdown

10 years of PSO, 6 years of PSOBB, now closing and signing off from Ragol.

Yeah. If I weren't at work, I would be in tears.
I still have to get my Fomar on lv 200...

A sad day, really. I don't even know what to say...

impressive how long its lasted. I'm sure JP PSU is set to last a long long time to come as well. Still if you miss PSO so much just join one of the private servers :)

Man, this is making me sad, and I've never played PSO.

I just got the email saying the same thing. I guess it's just not profitable enough anymore. 6 years is a good run, yeah? This frees up Sega's community managers for PSO2 though. That's not a bad thing. Come to think about it, maybe this means we'll see PSO2 early in 2011 rather than later.

Buck up, guys. Seems everyone's missed the silver lining of the news: upcoming PSO2 test! Here, I'll copy-pasta what I wrote over at PSUPedia.

The Japanese version of PSOBB is finally coming to an end. At 4:00p.m. JST on December 27, 2010, the servers will go offline permanently. Here is a schedule of how things will go for the final few months.

November 29: Hunters License sales and all special access code usage halted.
November 30 - December 27: Free access to the game servers.
December 14 - December 27: Special bonuses applied (rare drops x10, rare enemies x5, EXP x2).
December 27: Servers go offline at 4:00p.m. JST.

Of course, this is all to make way for PSO2. And as it turns out, there are discussions going on to give PSOBB subscribers access to a PSO2 "user participation test" (among other things). No other details were given, but it says to stay tuned to the official site for more information.

@Espio: Oh shi-

Still sad to hear it's shutting down, but one hell of a run it had.

My god, 6 years. It's a long time coming. But here's hope to PSO2!

Hope they're not talking about currently active PSOBBjp accounts, I still have a level 70 stacked somewhere on there after a quick month, love to get into PSO2 testing.

It is sad to see the last official PSO standing having its head in the chopping block. I'm very glad I am on the Gamecube version of PSO and no matter what happens to a server I'll always have my character available to me.

Still, this is the true end of official PSO - at least for online service.

I'm going to listen to my PSO soundtrack CDs today as a tribute to this incredible game.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this information here because it's pretty gray. But seeing as it involves the preservation of characters(I know firsthand how attached you can get to those) and Sega isn't really making money off the Phantasy Star Online franchise at the moment, I'm posting this anyway. If I recall correctly, there is a way to 'extract' your character data from the official server, where it can be implemented for use in private servers. I'm not quite sure on all the specifics of it but your character data is only about 500kb in size.

Sad to see it go, even if I'm not affected by it. I really miss the days of PSOGC, PSOX, and Blue Burst (official servers)

Although it's sad to see this go, I'm just glad I've been set up in a private server for a while. :)

I am still on the monthly Card billing system actually, so I guess I'll save 10 bucks a month. But I just know I will be enlisting for PSO2 anyway...

Still. I should do the last tidbits of levelling up...

Looks like I'm subscribing to PSO:BBjp then. If it means getting into an alpha or beta test for PSO2, then hells yeah.

I remember the beta test for PSO:BB like it was yesterday.

I'm impressed how long it lasted. It has had a long time running, and it is sad to see it go. But to know that it has lasted as long as it has... I'm impressed.

it's sad that online games can't last forever - especially when the games are as incredible as PSO..
to me it's more than a game, and it had great influence on my life, on who i am, and what i'm doing now..

but i don't want to write a novel :P

PSO 2000-2010, R.I.P.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of PSO2, tho, and perhaps a virtual re-release of PSOBB in the near future (xbla/psn)

I haven't had an active account on the JP servers for some time now, but I'm still saddened by this. The emails in my inbox every so often were a warm, fuzzy reminder that there was still an official server going, still officially supported PSO out there. I've been on private servers for a while now, but it still made me happy to know it was still there and still going. I started JPBB back during the open beta in 2004.

And now the final end is coming. The shutdown of the last remaining PSO server.

You can be damn sure I'm going to be there. The only question is if I'll be running something with Disk 3 blaring or just sitting in the lobby with PSO music going.

Anyone else planning to be there?

Mitz
Oct 26, 2010, 06:23 PM
Well I checked my email and I had the mail as well, so surely my account is still in their database. If I'm able to play, I will probably do it.

I'm aware of that, and play on it with some regularity.

For the purposes of this thread, however, which is covering official things, the JPBB servers are PSO's last stand.

The 27th is a Monday. Monday seems like an interesting time to end the game. I suppose it gives people a chance to play their hearts out over the weekend but it makes it hard to catch the end of the servers.

Mitz
Oct 27, 2010, 06:19 AM
Monday at 16:00, I'm going to assume that's JST. That's still at least 13 hours ahead of you guys. So if you want to see, say the last 3 hours of the server, you'd have to be up from 0:00 to 3:00 and that's pretty easy to do. And if you're near the westcoast it only get easier.

I would assume those would stop when the game stops because those comics are "XXth Anniversary" comics.

So is anybody going to sign up for a BB account just so they can get in to the PSO2 trial? I would consider it, but I am not even sure where to begin.

Alas, I did not make my final TTF, and Falz killed me. I was leaving the med center when the disconnect hit, alas, and did not make it out to the lobby to say goodbye.

It was a good feeling, though. One last nailbiting go against evil itself, would I make it in time, would I die, would I not die but not make it? So epic.

Time for a rematch. PSO is dead, long live PSO. ;)

Still one of the best games of all time. :D

Nai_Calus
Dec 27, 2010, 10:20 AM
Yep. Would have sat in the lobby, but I was trying to beat Falz before time ran out. Sadly, he beat *me*, and the DC hit while I was leaving the med center. ;)

Sad to see it go. There's still ways, but this was the last official server. Ten years of PSO, although I only started playing in early 2003 and I've taken breaks. Even so, some goddamn good memories on this game.

Goodbye, PSO. May you live forever via the servers we can't talk about. ;)

And Falz? I demand a rematch. And you're going *down*.

They are making a PSO memorial and they are accepting screen shots for it. I'm not sure if there are any prizes affiliated with this since I don't have a perfect translation of the text.

http://psobb.jp/memorial/

The main site itself has a message now. Is anyone able to translate what it says?

I took 40gb of videos frapsing everything around.
Met a lot of people I had not seen in 2 years.
We got the fateful disconnect as Olga Flow was getting butthurt. Their Respective Tomorrows indeed.

The official page thanks us all for the last 6 years and promises to make the Phantasy Star series evolve again, so if we want to give our input, we may speak.

I can't believe I actually played that game over 6 years. It seems like yesterday I was creating a pink hucaseal and getting my ass owned by the very first ennemy I met in episode 2...
