A non 4G phone... has 4G? Questions, more than anything

I somehow got 4G on my 3G phone......

Notice the "H" instead of "3G".....

I have my phone "rooted" (kinda like the iPhone's Jailbreak..)
And there's a non Samsung update on there..

So I'm not sure if that helps..
And speeds are definitely up to par with my friend's actual 4G enabled phone, the HTC G2.

My main question is- is it actually 4G, or is it 3G that appears to say H (4G)?

Cause, I thought the phone itself had to have the radio parts for it...

T-Mobile's '4G' is actually 3G technology that is just much faster than normal 3G. Engadget has a great article explaining the shit storm that is 4G, here. (http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/17/2g-3g-4g-and-everything-in-between-an-engadget-wireless-prim/) Not sure if you have 4G or not. I assume that some phones have already shipped with the HSPA+ radios on them.

'4G' is just a 3G client with some extra underends that they market as 4G nobody has 4G.

What I'm really asking is- is this just a trick, or am I getting that 3G+ junk?

The H stands for HSUPA/HSDPA which is that "3G+ junk."

H means you're on T-Mobile's HSPA+ Network. And with all four major carriers advertising "4G" to compete with one another, everyone's just talking bigger than what's really there. Technically HSDPA is a form of 3G, but it's faster than "3G" of two years back. Let's be honest, as long as it's fast enough, who cares what it's called?

Also, would be helpful posting your phone's model.

It's not ADW... it's a custom 2.2 rom, made to look like Gingerbread (2.3)..
It's just the Froyo(or just 2.2 stock) launcher, but with the Gingerbread theme, which is why the icons have color...
(Pretty much what the HTC G2 has, stock.)

Right now it's running a custom firmware- FW Version 2.2 by Team Whiskey... (Nero v4.1)

(Which is also why I was asking if it's just 3G made to look like the 3G+ junk, instead of actually being on the HSSDblah blah network)...
