Well I don't agree with this, in a game like PS I want content, things to do, not an oversized map.

It's true...the bigger the world...the less there is to do in it...

Free roaming a giant plain land is overrated if you can't put a bunch of obstactles and zelda-like features into it. which I doubt is happening with any mmo game.

But I don't want PSO2 to feel small and linear like pso did either... maybe something a little bit more adventurous than PSU's world.

Of course I'm up for whatever would make vehicles possible...gosh I remember PSU psyching a bunch of people out with vehicles too...which ended up Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaame.

PSO is a dungeon crawler, not a world-sized MMO. Any Phantasy Star, really
This really wouldn't fit PSO in any way, neither would it even remotely be PSO anymore.

An open world wouldn't really work for a online Phantasy Star game, in my opinion. Part of the online PS series charm is the casual friendly nature of the games, players can just play a bit per day and feel like they achieved something, while most of online open world styled games usually require more time spent in them.

An open world could aslo have problems with population, if the population is too small, the great majority of the areas would be completely empty.
If the population is too big, players would have problems to be able to fight enemies in more populated areas, there wouldn't be enough enemies for everyone.

Then there's the bosses, usually in open world online games bosses only respawn days after they're defeated, that means that a great part of the players could never see certain bosses.

In my opinion, the best thing for PSO2 would be to keep the instaced styled gameplay, but it should have more exploration, should be less linear.

This was a problem I noticed on PSU. When I played, the only populated parts of the game were White Beast, the Casino, and 4th floor of Guardians Colony (I think that's what it was called). There was an occasional population shift whenever a new mission popped up, but then it would usually end up with another shift back to White Beast. It was a shame that most of the lobbies and missions were so barren especially since some of the older missions were pretty fun, but just not as rewarding.

What vehicles? Hoverbikes in 1UP and hoverboards in Lightning Carnaval where the only one released (I thought they where pretty cool, I really wish more missions supported those. ).
While they hyped us with tanks and those yoshi chocobos hybrides.

Those 4 and I was also expecting ppt's and space ships to have to some fun...

This of course was before we all knew much of PSU's gameplay and it's godliness was still an illusion of course...

and vehicles + dungeon crawling map box = dotdotdot anyway D:... unless we're gonna go starfox 64 on planetary travel.

Awesome, I'm buying Fuel tomorrow.

I remember exploring a world in the classic games, so I don't see what's the problem here really...

Worlds are only as fun as the amount of things to do in them. I have no intention of playing a game with miles of empty space. So no thanks.

Edit: that guy is a pretty good reviewer, and he explains very well why this would be a terrible idea for any genre of game that doesn't need it.

PSO is a Dungeon Crawler. It relies on contained, instanced, scripted (but rearrangeable) fun. This would suck all kinds of balls as a PSO game.

I didn't mean that huge. I just meant no loading screens. Except when you go between planets.

that whole feeling of "i can pick this game up, play it, and have fun for about 30 minutes while still accomplishing something" seems like it would be completely lost in a world that huge.

And there would be a map that big on every planet PSO2 offers.

Sort of like WoW. Of course, that goes back to the debate of whether we would prefer open-world or not.

I prefer giant boxes seperated by load screens with lots of content and pretty stuff inside, over one huge mega giant box with a few pretty things that you'll look at once, and just a lot of walking.

Only mmo that looks good like this in my opinion would be lineage 2 and final fantasy 14...note I say LOOKS good...and I don't even know why I say lineage 2... D:

Still I wouldn't mind some starfox style space travel between planets...*cough* and maybe instead of "my room" you'd have a whole mini ship to yourself with the same functions...It'd be all digital love-like (daft punk.)

PS doesn't have enough space adventure...*cough* but none of that eve online crap

Kinda like Valkyria Chronicles 2's Instances?

QFT.

Travel time sucks up SO much of your actual playtime. I hope they stick to their typical PS theme and go with instanced zones with lobbys, towns, etc.

What if lobbies where scattered in an open world? imagine Moatoob as a single map, base camps would still be lobbies, with fast travel between them, but then in the open world you could go from Dagora to the desert... or the valley taking another direction, then the mines, then the glaciers...

I've always imagined that something like, but not exactly like, what White Knight Chronicles does with it's world is would work well. Instanced but decent sized and good looking areas that flow well with towns, lobbies essential, in between. Kind of like what Landman said. Or maybe Guild Wars. I don't really remember how GW works though.
