I've played a lot of PSO in my day, and I figured I would make my first post conducive to entertaining discussion while at the same time revealing myself to be a huge nerd.
So, what would you make the background music for each stage? Here're some of my picks—I haven't chosen for all of them yet.
Forest 1: Polovtsian Dances (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polovtsian_Dances) from Alexander Borodin's opera Prince Igor.
The mood of the piece seems to match the superficial appearance of the first stage—it's peaceful, but with some action.

Forest 2: Boléro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boléro) by Maurice Ravel.
This fits well with the rain of the second stage. Ravel's vision of the piece, an open-air setting near a factory, also corresponds with the second stage's juxtaposition of the forest and the modernity of the Central Dome.

Mines: Ballet Mécanique (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballet_Mécanique), by George Antheil.
This 1924 composition is scored for player pianos, propellers, sirens, and more, so it's a natural for a mine populated by robots.

Ruins: Piano Sonata No. 2 in E minor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_Sonata_No._2_(Shostakovich)), by Dmitri Shostakovich.
The dark, malevolent finale movement, which is said to have been inspired by reports of Nazis forcing Jews to dance before they die, fits this stage very well.

VR Spaceship: The Planets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Planets), by Gustav Holst.
Fairly self-explanatory. It's in space, so a suite about the planets of the Solar System is perfect.
Here's the movement "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity".
