Is anyone else having problems with freeplay? I just sit around with it saying matchmaking, why is that?

Well because you need other people that are also doing freeplay and are at the matchmaking screen to join each others party.
If no one is there no party could be made... :<
Its a lame system and not really popular anymore these times.
(It would be allot better if people could join midmission)
You should try exchanging Friendcodes if you really want to play online, there are quite some topics about them on psow dedicated for exchanging them.
