Perhaps all that Star Ocean-esque robot plating is relevant to something, like gives them amplified abilities to do those crazy things they do like swing giant swords and, low and behold, defy gravity for a brief moment.

I have to admit, the graphics aren't as nice as I had hoped. Shadows still look terrible, pixelated. Looks like a hybrid of PSO/PSU. I miss Symbol Chat, I hope it makes a return, I hated those annoying facial expression pop-ins in PSU.

But graphics aren't everything, the gameplay looks pretty sweet.

C'mon guys, these are like... pre-Alpha screenshots we're looking at here. The game's still got a lot of development to go. Yes, the graphics need some cleaning up, and I don't think Sega's so retarded that they'd forget to put in Forces, Casts, and MAG's in some form or another.

Let's hope I don't have to eat those words...

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to say something like this. I totaly agree with it.

I doubt PSo2 is far from finished. It still needs polish. However these are just some alpha screen shots and gameplay.

Plus, these are just some crappy screenshots (they look upscaled). If PSO2 takes full advantage of PC hardware then it's gonna look damn good.

I can already picture this badboy on full 1920/1080 with Anti Aliasing x8 with super sampling X8 and all that good stuff. It's gonna look amazing.

The one thing I do not like is how everyone has "cast" parts on...I hope we get some "clothes" type stuff in pso2 like in psu.

This is also looking alot like Star Ocean 4 (not a bad thing at all the graphics in SO4 look amazing).

That said, i'm loving what i'm seeing thus far. very pleased :D

Ffuzzy-Logik
Apr 24, 2011, 10:27 PM
There's no way those pictures are upscaled. You wouldn't be able to read the details on the HUD if they were resized from a smaller resolution.

Vashyron
Apr 24, 2011, 10:27 PM
They aren't upscaled, the HUD would be unreadable. (Especially the "not registered" text on the hotkeys.)

I'm hoping for some changes, there might be some, but not expecting a overhaul.

I agree; 4 is way too few for me. Up to 6 seems okay though. Oh, and scale the difficulty appropriately depending on how many people are in the party; I don't want to be able to completely rape a boss in 10 seconds again...

I don't want to be able to completely rape a boss in 10 seconds again...

This is so true. I hate bosses who die faster than a normal enemy in any game. Especialy in less than 10 seconds...
Give epic boss battles, difficult boss battles that makes one strategize, that makes one pumped and excited to fight.

Not enough Casts being supreme and Forces flaunting their techniques for my tastes. Still, seeing the combat being much more fluid and slightly more varied has made me happy (is hoping for Forces to bomb enemies while jumping). Even though I like the "high tech fabric+lightweight armor plating" style of the character's clothing, I do wish there will be different clothing options. Then again, this is some extremely early screenshots and footage, so there will most likely be more to come. All in all, I'm liking this.

...Though, why am I thinking of God Eater Burst after watching that video?

If we see some kind of counter tallying your number of hits on an enemy, then yes, it's totally DMC.

RemiusTA
Apr 25, 2011, 12:10 AM
I dont think DMC even tallies hits anymore. It's completely useless as an indicator these days. They just use the Scoring system these days.

I think PSO2 might as well just leave that shit out. I doubt they'll put that much depth into the battle engine -- afterall, you have to account for tons of weapons, units, and teammates as well. Last thing this game needs to be is dynasty warriors....

Yeah, the gameplay is most definitely paying attention to the other games in it's genre. That's no mistake. But the fact they're implementing the PSO customization into it is what makes it interesting to me.

Sounds to me like itmeans no customization whatsoever, outside of choosing a hat and armor color, as that's what PSO's "customization" was. And, if that's the case, I won't be purchasing PSO2.

yea btw FF14/RIFT ALPHA looked better then that. flat shadows, no bump maping come on, mod teams do better jobs then that :(

If anything they should have MORE customization than their previous game, PSP2i.

Graphic engines these days have more than enough power to handle it.

-Wayu

Remember how PSO had 3 buttons, and you pulled the R-trigger, and you had 3 more slots? And you assigned attacks to those buttons?

That was called "customization" in PSO (Remember the menu option?). Not talking about character customization, i was talking about battle customization.

PSO2 uses the same system, much to my joy, because it's exactly how i hoped they'd evolve the Photon Art system.

When PSO2 advertises that it features "custom combos", that's what I believe they're referring to. And im glad, because it allows far more than PSU's dumb system of linking attacks to weapons and only using 2 buttons for attacks and combos.

I can agree and also disagree with this....

If their is clothing customization...I would rather it be armor interchangeablity like when you equip something new you can see it.....

not just a shield and a visual effect....

Or maybe like clothing with armor pieces over it...like each frame or armor your character gets its incorperated into the clothing u wear...so it adds to the individuality like metal plates over jeans....scarfs over chestplates...and the ability to dye said armor would be nice....so it can actually match your clothing tastes....

but IF it was just clothing...that's a big N.O. for me....at least...cause srsly who fights in a battle with plasma/photon energy and wears cotton? (facepalm)

@evegoden:

While your idea is interesting, I don't think bulky floating gundam plates is any better than wearing whatever you want and rolling with it, psu could of had more variety in outfits but they didn't really go wrong if you asked me. and I actually LIKED the lineshield concept, it was simple, looked cool, it worked, it MOSTLY made sense and again players could wear whatever they wanted.

I hate the fact that in other games you'd get clothes you'd like, but then once you level up, the next outfit looks horrible, and then by the time you get to endgame, everyone is just wearing the same stuff, or if it's f2p whatever in the cash shop. e_e;

I'd rather be able to jump at a dragons head while wearing a t-shirt and jeans, while not complaining if my teammates look like loli school girls, men in business suits, or futuristic armored warriors and mini gundams, with everyone happy.

hehe didnt mean bulky plates i meant shards and pecies of armor intergrated with ur clothes...like maybe a badass spiky spinal column down the characters back...with two shin or thigh plates strapped ontop of the jeans... and maybe a chest piece thats simmalar to issacs in deadspace laying over your center of ur chest... and you know like a couple plates here and there....that kinda made your outfit look that much better....spiky bits... collars....shin guards...belt buckles....spinal plates etc etc wrist guards...small but noticeable...also headbands.../hoods...

While I don't like a lot of the outfits people choose in PSP2, I definitely like the freedom and variety to make any kind of look you want.

I say they should make customization like in Soul Calibur IV. You could make ANYone in that game.

Maybe give us the choice of customizing the left arm / leg separate from the right arm /leg?

Or how about a bunch of slots for accessories / visual units that don't take up slots on your actual armor?

Whatever it is, it's obviously either something different (and better) than the PSU engine or It's the PSU Engine with huge improvements.

PSU Engine did not have physics, if you watch the PSO2 video, you can see jiggle bones on the clothing and hair of some characters. Most PSU did in this regard was "fake" physics by animating them and they only bothered with long hair.

Also PSO2 jumping looks to be actual jumping, instead of PSU's "animate it to look like jumping, but really still on the ground."

I get so much more of a "kick" out of watching the videos from PSO2 than what I got when playing PSU. While PSU was a step in the right direction, I feel the combat lacked that "punch". It never felt satisfying, despite the borderline ridiculous PAs.

PSO2, however, seem to be a different deal. Of course it's too early to say anything for sure, but it seems a lot more fluid. Now, let's hope the combat got depth behind the delicious surface.

Also, the character design is much better than PSU's imoho. The majority of the models (at least the NPCs) in PSU felt plastic and uninspired.

Anduril

I think that so far this looks way better than PSU ever did, and I'm glad that they are showing gameplay instead of some prerendered cutscene. My biggest hope is that if this does go back to PSO's class system that they give us RAnewms and RAnewearls, especially with the new gun style.

Copy Past from rpgsite.net

For those that may not remember, at last year's Tokyo Game Show, SEGA showed off a reel of upcoming games that they were working on. One of those just so happened to be a sequel to the first true online RPGs for the consoles when it made its debut on the Dreamcast, the game called Phantasy Star Online 2.

Today, after months of bated breath and barely a word from the company on the current status of its project (we at least know there will be an alpha test this summer in Japan), we have for you today details about the story of PSO2, along with 15 different screeenshots and even a gameplay trailer from today's Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity fan appreciation event held in Akihabara in Japan. All of the media does a great job showing off the incredible engine that is going into this game, which may be a modified version of the Hedgehog Engine.

The story is as follows, taken from 4Gamer, which was shown as a series of one-line quotes in the presentation: "The ship fleet Oracle which travels the endless stars. A new adventure that awaits on the countless planets. Invasion of the malice that covers the universe. The name of the people who face off against them is Arcs. Will the universe be saved, or will it be swallowed up? It’s in the hands of you, the hero."

According to the video, there will be randomized dungeons just like in the first game, along with a more combo-focused battle system, a Third-Person Shooter camera and action system, the ability to jump around the environment, the capability to customize your equipment in many different ways, weather transitions, random events that occur during the course of battle, and like the first one, a promise for a neverending adventure.

Phantasy Star series producer Satoshi Sakai and his staff promised on stage at the event that they are trying their best to give players a strong feeling of adventure that they feel has been lost in today's world of RPGs, and the aim is to bring a more mass appeal while making sure hardcore fans and online gamers have plenty to enjoy as they celebrate the 10th anniversary of Phantasy Star Online's release.

I have sunk literally hundreds of hours into this game and it still holds a strong place in my heart to this day. I just hope we still get to use the Spread Needle and Pan Arms. Oh, and a Sega Dreamcast for a MAG! The combat looks way more hectic compared to the first, but still seems to capture the look and feel of the environments in the first, which I loved. Here's to hoping we get more details about a Western release at this year's E3.

Further details will be revealed before the alpha test begins this summer. In the meantime, take a look at the preview video (shot using a camera at the event so we apologize beforehand for the quality) and screenshots below!

A really interesting bit is this one...

The name of the people who face off against them is Arcs. Will the universe be saved, or will it be swallowed up? It’s in the hands of you, the hero."

Referencing the Arcs of pso ep 3 the card revolution. Interesting indeed.

Also a nother interesting tid bit is from the website at the end of the trailer - http://pso2.jp/ - it has all the screen shots we've seen, but below that is a box with 4-28 and the word "Movie." Which leads me to believe that they may release the trailer from the recent presentation in some nice HD quality.

From the sounds of the story, it looks like we won't have to worry about PSU style generic anime casting and story telling, But hopefully they're still able to pull it off the way they did in PSO...

PSZ's style was kind of close, and kind of interesting outside of the main characters, but it felt boring.

I played PSO vers 1 on Dreamcast with dial-up, then vers 2... then Ep 1 & 2 on Gamecube... then PSU and PSU: AoI...

I do hope that PSO 2 is free to play and has something similar to Spiral Knights where you can buy extra Energy/credits for like forging weapons and accessing certain areas, instead of charging $10 for 30 days of online play... I can't wait to see all the character create options. I do hope they bring back classic MAGs like Rati, and hope they bring back legendary weapons like the Lavis weapons....

Spiral Knights is supported by Sega, and it's Free to Play, and has it's own means of gaining funds via it's Energy system.

For now Spiral Knights is filling the void for lack of PSO... until PSO 2 is out.

Alot of MMO's have gone Free to Play (such as Dungeons & Dragons Online), so I am praying PSO 2 will be as well. Scraping up $10 a month to play an online game can be tough when one has.. very limited income.

I do hope PSO 2 gets a US release.. if not I'll import it.

Free to play? Screw that noise, I don't want a game where I have to pay extra to access certain parts of the it, such as weapons and areas. Not only would that split the community up like mad and destroy any kind of in-game economy, it would also probably become more expensive than actually paying a monthly fee if you wanted to get all the best items. Not only that, but a monthly fee filters out a lot of the unwanted crowd. PSU free demo porn ads, anyone?

If you can't afford 10-15 dollars a month, I don't see how you can afford a $60 game. A monthly fee is the perfect way to go, everyone remains equal that way.

ShadowDragon28

It works for Sega & Three Ring's Spiral Knights.
Paying for extra Energy to forge weapons are do more runs of the in-game areas (after your pool of 100 Energy is used up) is an option.
Something similar could work for PSO 2 IMO.
Heck Dungeons and Dragons Online is even free to play... LOL.

Ffuzzy-Logik
Apr 25, 2011, 06:31 PM
A system that makes you pay just to be able to do runs is really dumb.

Free to play with an ill-conceived cash shop is much worse than pay to play with a well designed cash shop.

ShadowDragon28
Apr 25, 2011, 06:35 PM
You don't pay to do runs. Your character has 100 Energy points which can be used to access the gate into the areas with monsters, or a player can spend that Energy on making weapons or armor. A person has the OPTION to buy EXTRA energy *IF* they want to do, to allow a player to forge more items or do EXTRA runs.. LOL. A player's basic pool of 100 Energy regenerates back to full after
24 hrs...

Spiral Knights system works very very well, and the number players are growing. It plays like a cross between LoZ:The Four Swords and PSO and is damn fun. A player hs access to all content and you don't have to pay anything if you chose not to. Payment for extra Energy is optional, for those that want to play hardcore for a longer amount of time..

Malachite
Apr 25, 2011, 06:40 PM
So basically... it uses a ridiculous system designed to milk as much money as it possibly can, out of people who like to play a lot?

Yeah, that's really, really stupid. I bet those energy points run out REALLY fast.

I have a better idea, as opposed to destroying PSO2 with a ridiculous "pay to play for more than a few minutes" system. It's called get a job. Seriously, 10 dollars a month? That's two packs of cigarettes, or a few candy bars, lol.

And Spiral Knights isn't "garbage". You shouldn't knock something until you've actually played the game.

I've sunk hundreds of dollars into PSO and PSU over the years, in all it's versions dude.

Played PSO since the servers for the Dreamcast PSO vers.1 went live. It's really uncalled for to say or imply I'm an example of "the unwanted crowd".

Wow.... Excuse me for having a different opinion...

Malachite
Apr 25, 2011, 07:07 PM
That being the case, you should understand why putting a limit on how much one can play in a day is ridiculous. I don't want to have to worry about stopping and going to some store, just so I can have more points to play the game. IN MY OPINION, those kinds of systems take away from the experience, a lot. I've played those kinds of games before, and from what I see, it's a terrible system.

You shouldn't be able to buy a weapon or the ability to create a weapon, because that defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place. You might as well just buy a level 200 character and the ending while you're at it.

It splits the community, destroys the economy, and defeats the value of any rare item.

ShadowDragon28
Apr 25, 2011, 07:17 PM
The system works fine for Spiral Knights.

There's been no "split in the community", it's got a strong in-game economy, and rare items are player crafted and still have alot of value based more on it's stats, the materials needed, and the cost to make.
Everything is working well for it. If I chose to I could buy 200 more Energy for $10 to forge more weapons or do extra runs if I wanted to, or I can wait 24 hrs until my Energy refills to play again. It's a player driven economy and system. It's doing very well for itself actually.

I can pay $5-$10 a month for an online game, but with lack-luster support. Why should I stick around? Sega killed the PS2 PSU servers and the updates had constant delays so I quit.

Why should I trust them to keep the possible US servers or their possible "global servers" for PSO 2
up-to-date on schedule now? Is it really worth my $10 *if the support is lacking*? I'm not so sure.

I love PSO, but some people don't make much money and have bills to pay too you know.

No, No, No, and again NO.

That sounds a lot like the system for Vindictus with the dungons, you are given 50 tokens ever 3 days and any dungon above the first 5 require you to to pay these tokens and when you are out of tokens you can't play at all. Sure other players can pay for you, but its very rare that some one will pay for you. Also the more high level dungeons you play the more tokens it costs with 0-7 runs its 2 tokens, 8 ~ 11 runs 3 tokens, any more than that it costs 4 tokens.

The catch is when you run out of tokens your SOL, unless you spend real $$ for more tokens. Great game Vindictus, I just don't like the token system that quite literally limits you physically how much you can progress in content at your level.

That is one thing I DO NOT want in PSO2. If I want to play a game 24/7 in content appropriate for my character level I should be able to with no restrictions what so ever. I'd rather spend the $10 bucks a month and play when ever and how much and how long I want with zero restrictions in content relevant to my character level.

Pay to play is a dying breed. While it may seem good now, think of the populations of PSU, are they high? WoW is really the only game that befeits.

Also if they hide content behind payments, thats just a bad system.

Maple Story? Despite what maybe your opinion on the game, it gets updates very often (the lastest one completly revamped the game and its world) and none of its content is hidden behind payments.

Sure the community would be slightly worse, but P2P doesn't suddenly make everyone extreamly nice, lots of P2P games have terrible communities.

I don't really agree.

I played PSP2 and felt the (more or less) unlimited customization led to one thing: An entire game filled with twin saber wielding vanguards. Also, with infinity, races no longer even had stats separating, just the type of ears. Less customization please, especially in the case of this being a full ORPG versus a handheld game with some ability to place online.

I like customization, but I think it should have more boundaries than PSP2 did. More difference between classes, races, etc. I'm all for clothes, abilities, and stats that are class/race/gender specific.

Wayu
Apr 25, 2011, 09:30 PM
In PSP2i the race/gender differences were still there. All you were doing during rebirths was adding set amount points to the base stats.

If certain clothes are class-limited I don't see an issue since most people want their character's clothing to match their class.

I'm talking about body customization more than clothing.

I thought that the cap for rebirth growths was the same for every gender/race? (ie.: with rebirth growths, every single character could reach X HP, Y ATP, etc.) essentially, if you and your budy both maxed out the bonuses with rebirth growths, you'dboth have the same stats at any given level.

Oh, yeah body customizations are a must. They've done that with PSO and PSU well enough already IMO.

I remeber an aweful numbers of space-skaterkids in PSU. Not a lot of care to look the part when killing monsters. Bikinis anyone? Rappy suits? I hated all that :/

Nope. For example, if the female Newman max TP was 1000 and the max TP for CASTs was 600, the difference is 400 (not true, just a random example). Even after rebirth bonuses, the difference will still be 400.

Although yeah I do think Infinity was a nice leap from vanilla PSP2 (Especially in regards to forces) but something about it still bugs me. Not sure what.

Either way it's just one of those things that should be tested and tuned from the start.

That's why the alpha and beta test were invented.

Yeah, of course. That last line was more directed at PSP2, which needed another standalone game to tweak the balance. I'm just bitter that there wasn't a cheaper option like an Infinity append disc or DLC add-on for those of us who didn't feel like buying a second game at near full price. But I got it anyways, cuz I'm a sucker.

At least in a proper online game they can just patch up things based on player feedback. So PSO2 has the potential to fare better in that regard.

I didn't really like single handed weapons in PSU, so I stuck with Wartecher. Plus, in vanilla, the class worked good as a frontline medic (which I like to be in these types of games).

Wartecher was the worst during vanilla PSU. It was physically painful to play. I know, I played WT for the entirety of v1.

The problem was that single handed weapons were necessary for a support/melee hybrid, so you could always cast Resta at a moment's notice, and that's why Acrotecher was so great. Also, daggers and whips are very fun and you are wrong if you think otherwise.

I would rather have p2p then f2p and required to buy "energy" to play more, I played some of these games on facebook, Mafiawars, vampire something, etc.

Point is it's stupid limit what people can do, I dont want PSO to become like a stupid facebook game. Just because that game you said works for it, Doesn't mean that it will work for PSO2.

If you cant afford $10 - $15 a month, then you have bigger problems to worry about.

So you don't mind paying $10 a month for lack-luster support and delayed content releases? Sure.. whatever floats your boat, man.

No, we apparently don't.

Because I'd rather pay 10 dollars a month for a game with lackluster support, than however much it costs to refill my energy every few runs, for a game with lackluster support.

If the game is that bad, I'm not going to play it anyway. Whichever payment method, you're still paying for the same game, lol. One payment method is just far, far less appealing.

My guess is that we'll have to pay to get the game itself with all its content, and small packages will be released for a couple dollars or something (eg. PSP2's extra weapons/clothes). Either that or they'll put them into large free updates or something.

So you don't mind paying $10 a month for lack-luster support and delayed content releases? Sure.. whatever floats your boat, man.

Or we could have an arbitrary system that limits what you can do and how long you can play based on coins/tokens/energy, ect. Not to mention easily spending more than $10 a month to keep playing the way a player wants too. Along with the lack-luster support and delayed content...whatever floats your boat.

Works both ways, and your assuming that Sega will purposely have lack-luster support and delayed content. While this was the story with PSU NA, PSU JP is quite the opposite. We can only hope for PSO2 that will change, but only time will tell.

I'd rather pay $10 a month and play how I want, whenever I want, and for as long as I please at content relevant to my characters level whether it be for an hour or for 24 straight hours. Using a system with an arbitrary limitation with coins/tokens/energy limits you to how much you can play at content relevant to your characters level and players will end up spending more than $10 a month with this system.

Only thing that kinda bugs me is the (Swords?) that appear in the video seem really freakin HUGE. Im all for huge weapons, but that was.. putting it overboard.

Did you even play the original PSO?
Most of the (Great) Swords where huge in comparison to small sized or average sized characters, unless you when you made your character you put him or her to
max. height.
