My work PS3 was just able to update, so I'm assuming this means that it should be publicly live relatively soon.

Hmmm...Well, from what I read on the Playstation blog, it only seems to be an update for the PS3 users to prepare for the eventual comeback of PSN. Still, looks like a step on the right track.

So this means that PSPs are unable to update at the time? Good thing I read this, seeing how I was about to attempt just that.

I will be at work until 11:00PM PST tonight. I will be sure to post here as soon as I know that the network is officially live.

Looks like I won't be making an inside announcement for everyone since PSN will be going up at different times based on location. Anyways, please refer to this blog post to see if where the PSN has been restored.

So far I've finished 2 games from my backlog during the downtime and now that it's coming back, I'm really happy that I can play PSPo2 online again. But, I'm also sad that I may not be able to finish the game I'm currently playing.

Now I feel both happy and sad, like when I'm drunk, but I know I'm sober. So confused...

So, what exactly are PSP owners supposed to do? I've never even been to the Playstation website.

EDIT: Are our old passwords supposed to not work? Is the whole point to get a E-mail notification to change your password for you to log back in? Were all our old passwords rendered invalid after the intrusion?

Ami
May 15, 2011, 01:18 AM
Right, because of what happened everyone has to change their PSN password to continue using PSN.

When you try to sign in you'll get a notification saying that you can't sign in. Within the span of 24hrs you'll receive an email on the address you signed up PSN with. In the Email it'll give you instructions on how to change your password. The email is going to take a while because it's a high volume of people going in and trying to get the email as well. I'm still waiting on mines and it's been live for my state for a good while.

Just out of curiosity what would happen if you just create a new PSN account, could you still play PSP2 online as characters are not linked to a specific account right?

Well yeah but it's justified. There are probably millions of people logging on the same time as you trying to get the email as well. Such a high volume of email requests, of course it's gonna take some time. You really should be glad that it wasn't the full 24 hours.

call customer support or try activating your psp again.

I had to activate my new psp to a old psn account today to play games i got in the past and the process went smoothly

(I am assuming your are able connect your psp to a computer)
try going here http://us.playstation.com/psn/signin/ and once you sign in go to the activate psp option.

First off Read this (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/05/15/update-on-service-restoration-rollout/)

When it gets back online try to do the password request again on the PC. Then wait. Thousands, if not millions, of people are trying to get their passwords reset at the exact same time as you. It can only do so much before it risks blowing itself up.

Cool. At the moment, I can't change my Japanese password due to them shutting down the service again. I was wondering why I was getting the PSN not available in my region issue when trying to do the email reset. Looks like while the other territories are getting back up, Sony Japan got slapped with a government mandate to keep service down until they can satisfy their government on the security front. Just a heads up for those now trying to get the Japanese account resets. My US account reset worked without a hitch, though.

Looks like the ability to change password via email works but the email sends the wrong address information. Just got word about it and it seems to work.

the link looks like
https://store.playstation.com/accounts/security/resetPassword.action?token=

and it should be like this
https://store.playstation.com/accounts/reset/resetPassword.action?token=

It goes to the same place, but the first URL doesn't go to the right version of the page. Tried it with my Japanese account and afterwards I also got the return email from Sony's PSN network to confirm the change.

IM still on the waiting list, tho i can bet with sony being hacked, all the other consoles will change their security as well, well its been over 24 hours so far, I cant blame them, they should have waited longer and turned the full system on, and also added a better PSN managment to the psp, so they wouldnt get hundreds of emails on that side

Well, yeah, did that.

Oh. Why didn't you make yourself 18 when you first started it? That way you could have just added a couple years and wouldn't have been expected to memorize a completely fake one. Ah well. Though calling personnel to do something an automated system is backed up on, I don't think they'd be all that helpful :/ , even if they were willing.

You don't have to click on forgotten password btw. If you type your original password in to log in, they'll send you a reset email anyway. I only said to click forgotten password because I couldn't remember my original one. That and my internet sucks, so the less it has to load the better.

apparently its down again, due to another breach

"Sony’s long cybersecurity nightmare may not be over quite yet.
On Wednesday, reports began to surface that the company’s PlayStation Network (PSN) has been breached yet again, this time via a vulnerability in its password reset interface. The bug was first reported by the gaming site Nyleveia, which also sent me a video of what seems to the exploit in action.
Using just a simple browsing trick, the demonstration video shows a user resetting the password for an account using only an email address and date of birth. Both those pieces of information were among the mass of data that Sony has said was stolen by hackers from its network last month. Meanwhile, Sony has taken down its password reset site “for maintenance.”

at this rate, i'll go back to PSU on the 360

There's actually very little they can do to handle this - the authentication info collected on accounts originally was stolen. There's nothing secret in place to use... They need some form of secure communication channel, but without authentication mechanisms the internet fails for that.

They COULD mail out new passwords to billing addresses (use a record safely before the breach). That would be secure, but time-consuming. And it would fail for anyone who hadn't made a purchase.
