To go along with the animation of the game coming out sometime this year there is also now going to be a Persona 4 fighting game that will be done by the blazblue arc system works team. Also P4 is gonna be released for the psp vita much like P3 was for psp.

I was hoping at some point that they would re-release the game the same they did with FES, but how would the fighting game work? Is there anything we can go on from there?

Persona 4 for the Vita? I'm eagerly awaiting the release date notification. That's game number 1 that has me wanting the Vita, right now.
I actually never played it for the PS2 as I kind of was waiting for the portable version since they've been porting every other Persona game to it. I kind of got into Shin Megami from Shin Megami, but I'm a rather late comer to the Persona series. However, the PSP has been a great system to play them on due to the ability to play it as a portable and a console system, by hooking it up to the TV. (I got my PSP Go after my PSP 2000 just because of that ability to play on TV with a PS3 controller, making it feel like a portable PS2 that can be optionally used as a PS2.)

Hope the Vita retains that ability.

Is it wrong that I've never played a Persona game before? What kinda game are they like?

I'm going to assume you've also never touched the main Shin Megami Tensei games.

RPG, with social simulation aspects, and some fairly deep mechanics for the main character's abilities. Alternates between a menu-driven city interface (the social stuff), and the dungeons, which are standard RPG fare, with turn-based battles.

The above applies only the 3 and 4 though. The earlier ones are different.

Holy shit... I got a reason for investing in the Vita in the future. And a fighting game! LMFAO. It looks beautiful already from the scans. I eagerly await these iterations of Persona 4.

Yeah, the fighting game is making me curious, just because I want to see how they manage to take Persona and make one... I mean, for the most part each person has one special attack, and otherwise casts spells or uses normal hits, so...

P4G day one import (Europe here).

I love you Atlus but hate you at the same time for not having a Europe division.

Akaimizu
Aug 31, 2011, 12:11 PM
I agree. Atlus really needs a European division. I think they'd do pretty well over there, even though I can see maybe 1 or 2 places that may give them grief based on the game content. Some places are really over-sensitive about things allowable in game content. Outside of a few, a number of Atlus titles kind of treads on or crosses a few lines.

Man, not completing Persona 4 is one of my biggest videogame regrets from the last couple years.

I need to either finish it up on PS2 (and I had a loooong way to go) or pick up a Vita at some point and get this port.

Gold is 4FES it seems like?

The fighting game reminds me alot like Jojo's Bizare Adventure with the Tarot Personas and whatnot.

That's what came to mind without even seeing the game. Though I wonder if they're going to lock certain ones with individual characters, or can you do more like SMT or Persona and choose which one is attached to your character? Would be neat if, even if they don't give you a full range of choices, have you pick between 2 or 3 Personas per character.

Even neater, if you can switch the personas between each round, with a simple button press to swap personas. That would give kind of a KOF-like variety of combat options between rounds.

Well, being able to change personas is actually anomalous. Only the main character can in 4, for instance (Though completing the social interaction with party members upgrades their personas.), and I think it's just the main character and the robot in 3.

Ahh. That's right. Playing by Persona 4 rules. Gotcha. Yeah. Been playing DS more lately, and Strange Journey, and was getting away from the concept of specific Persona per character.

Akaimizu

Hmm. Well if playing the games that play specifically like P3 and P4. P3 is a nice one to start with then work your way to 4. They are kind of separated from the gamestyle of 1 and 2 a bit, so you don't have to play the whole series in order. When Persona started, it was a bit closer in roots to the regular SMT line.

If you have a PC, there is a free-to-play SMT game which utilizes an MMO with more of the Shin Megami Tensei style of gameplay. Shin Megami Tensei Imagine.

The biggest difference between Shin Megami and later Persona titles (3 and 4) (not counting another difference series like SMT Devil Survivor), is how the creatures you use are treated.

Persona (like in 3 and 4) are treated more like some extension of yourself. You get the cards, you have them in your arsenal to perform powers, but you are truly the combatant just using them to perform certain things.

In regular SMT, original line, games, they are demons and treated even more like individual characters. I.E. You actually talk to them, negotiate for things, make contracts with them to be in your party, negotiate for items, or other things. Maybe even gain favor for meeting them while you have one of their friends in your party. You may even get encounters where a party of demons initiates the conversation with you before you select one to talk to. (Early Persona games have some of this in there. Like Persona 2). Strange Journey being the latest actual Shin Megami Tensei title, to have this feature. (That's also called Shin Megami Tensei 4, by some). However, those games generally don't have the whole school simulation (time-sensitive) aspects of the late Persona; you deal with creature negotation instead, while having a more free-time oldschool aspect to the game.

It's all down to preference which style of play suits you more. It differs, per series, and in the case of Persona (changed during the series to differentiate itself from SMT games keeping a number of similarities in creatures and abilities.).

I've read that Persona 4 is easier for newcomers, so I'd recommend that. However, I've also heard from fans that Persona 3 is better, and it is available on PSP (with what's supposed to be a great port), so that may affect your decision.

That would awesome if you could play as the MC from Persona 3. Regardless of what happened to him. Or her if you played the extra story in the PSP version.

When I looked it up last night it's supposed to involve the cast for both 3 and 4.

The PSP port of Persona 3 just adds in a female perspective, events are changed a bit to conform with the choices and the male character is also only able to wield a short sword. Another thing not in the port, is the FES story line with Aigis taking the lead. You might miss out on that story arc, but not needed to understand what happens after. There's even Trinity Soul if you want to see a cameo of Akihiko from 3.

Sounds iffy. If they do that and follow their rule, The cast of persona 3 wouldn't be able to use their persona unless using a drug.

Don't forget the main thing with P3P: The ability to control your entire party. That was the huge downfall of P3 compared to P4 after it was released.

Also made Tartarus easier because of infinite time in it, just automatically lose a tier of health when leaving. Grinding in P3P is lovely.

Best thing in battle in P4... having everyone jump onto the enemy and pummel it. (And Chie's special. Reliable instant death... by kicking them into the stratosphere)

At least they implemented the option to guard instead of waiting and get pummeled. Made fighting the reaper that much easier.

I didn't think it was a monster gun like that... Though being a revolver, well...

I want to see them put the evolved forms of their personas in somewhere too... perhaps for finishing moves or something.

Saw that earlier today. What the FUCK are they wearing though? I don't mind Mitsuru's shirt but Akihiko's...suit, is horrible. Better be an alt, lol. I guess it's his boxing ring costume?

Still disappointed it only has a few P3 characters in it, and no antagonists. It better be like a PS3 download for $20. Not paying $60 for a fighting game with the roster of an arcade game.

I didn't get his outfit either. No its not an alt lol. His official artwork dictates that's what he's gonna wear. I guess that wound he received long ago really did stay lol. I like his cut hair though. Mitsuru doing some swag? I'm sold. I didn't know what to think of her outfit honestly. Going dominatrix on us gave me a bit of a chuckle. I love that rapier though.

Also Naoto plays exactly how I thought. Keep away.

If they're gonna stick the P3 cast, they got to get Yukari, Junpei, Kuromaru, and Ken. PLUS the P3 MC... And maybe Metis. (I didn't beat the Answer yet so no spoilers about her please.)

Not a major spoiler, rather she just doesn't exist in the traditional sense. Said that in the vaguest way possible.

If they stick in the rest of the P3/FES cast, I would like to see how each one turned out, but I can already imagine them being either dressed up(or Akihiko's case, not so much) for when they're living their life outside of the Dark Hour.
