The Dreamcast (ドリームキャスト Dorīmukyasuto? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Installing_Japanese_character_sets)) is a 128-bit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/128-bit) video game console (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console) which was released by Sega (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega) in late 1998 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_in_video_gaming) as the successor to the Sega Saturn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Saturn). It was the first entry in the sixth generation of video game consoles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_game_consoles_%28sixth_generation %29), preceding Sony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Computer_Entertainment)'s PlayStation 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_2), Microsoft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft)'s Xbox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox) and the Nintendo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo) GameCube (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_GameCube).
Sega discontinued the Dreamcast in March 2001 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_in_video_gaming)[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Dreamcast#cite_note-discontinued-0) and withdrew entirely from the console hardware business, making it the company's final console. Support of the system continued in Europe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe) and Oceania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceania) until the end of 2002 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_in_video_gaming),[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Dreamcast#cite_note-Euro2002-4) while in Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan), consoles were still sold until 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_in_video_gaming) and new licensed games continued to be released.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Dreamcast#cite_note-Sega_of_Japan-5) According to Bernie Stolar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Stolar), former President and CEO of Sega of America, the Dreamcast was discontinued because the new chair of Sega wanted the company to focus on software.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Dreamcast#cite_note-6)
Despite its short lifespan, the Dreamcast has garnered cult status (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_status) for its history and features. It was widely hailed as ahead of its time, and is still held in high regard for pioneering online console gaming—it was the first console to include a built-in modem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modem) and Internet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet) support for online play (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_game).[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Dreamcast#cite_note-7)[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Dreamcast#cite_note-G4_GM-8) As of 2011 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_in_video_gaming), the console is still supported through various MIL-CD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIL-CD) independent releases.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Dreamcast#cite_note-9)[/spoiler-box]

It's been some time since the Dreamcast came out, and I still have the dreamcast I got a couple years after it did. Unfortunately, I believe it finally died on me some time back (RIP). Any favorite games, memories or other things for you guys?

Note: I know that I'm using the U.S. release date, deal w/it.

PSO, Ikaruga, V8: Second Offense, Toy Commander, Grandia 2, Fur Fighters, and too many other games to name.

Also the only console to have been field-goaled across the living room by my dad.

Currently the proud owner of 7 VMUs, 2 4Xs, 1 screenless MU, and a 16X.

I still have my Dreamcast but it's currently packed away in a box. Gotta say PSO was probably my all time favorite game on there. One of my best memories though was when myself and 2 of my roommates played NFL2K1 online against another group of guys from Texas Tech. We were all at Texas A&M at the time so while they played our other friend used the keyboard to talk trash and they had a friend doing the same thing. We won on a game winning FG but wow I still remember that one like it was yesterday b/c in the end all of us had a great time playing

I was actually about ready to just give up on gaming altogether after the PSX generation. The whole industry had just gotten pretty stale and pointless around that time, and I didn't see a reason to continue. Until the Dreamcast came out anyhow. The first time I saw it demo'd was when the Sega Assault Vehicle showed up at Ozzfest and the guys from Pantera and Static-X were playing Dead or Alive on stage on a huge jumbotron monitor. I was impressed, but I didn't get one until I heard new Phantasy Star game was coming out. There were so many great and innovative titles for that system, and a few that even gave me that "gamers glow" ~ that rush of euphoria as your mind empties (becomes like a polished mirror, in Kung Fu terms) and your fingers just move on instinct and adrenaline. Especially Ikaruga and Soul Calibur. Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament were a dream to play with a Keyboard and Mouse. For the longest time, even after the DC went offline, I'd play a few rounds of those twitch shooters to prime myself before joining my cousin on XBL for Halo 2. After that, the Halo seemed to play in slow motion, and the headshots flowed like water.

I still have my Dreamcast hooked up to my VGA monitor, though it doesn't get all that much playtime anymore.

Favs: Skies of Arcadia, Ikaruga, PSO, Seaman, Alien Front Online (lol, voice chat over 56k!), Soul Calibur, Seaman, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue I & II, Evil Twin, Rez, The Typing of the Dead.

I think I shall commemorate this b-day with a full playthrough of Street Fighter III Double Impact. The only games out of the SFIII series that remains console exclusive to the Dreamcast to this day.

Yeah, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 were definitely highlights for me. I missed out on PSO unfortunately. We didn't have internet at the time, and I was too young to have any kind of money gain.

No Soul Calibur?
(one appearance in CTRL F)

One of the best console launch games ever. Paved the way for better and better arcade ports, sorta killing the arcades in the process as well.

Dreamcast was awesome. Mine still lives but everything for it is broken.

Your games broke before the console?

Bro though it would be funny to throw rayman 2 at me and broke on impact. The rest my sis broke. The controller's wire got chew by my dog. Memory unit needs a new battery.

Besides, I made sure my N64 keeps running. I'll make sure my dreamcast can still run until its parts start to degrade beyond repair.

This thread needs more Tennis 2K2.

Also, I should hook up my Dreamcast. Well, one of them. Over the years I've accumulated two DCs, like 7-8 controllers, and a bunch of duplicate games. (Most of this is because my girlfriend's neighbor's kids were throwing out their Dreamcast, so I just grabbed the bag off the street. Others are just because my brother bought some accessories without realizing how many we already had.)

Godspeed, Dreamcast mouse new in box. Then I see on a Japan import site, they got a clear one overseas. And I don't even know what games actually support the mouse!

QIII:Arena and Unreal Tournament. That's about all the use I got out of the DC's mouse, but that's about all that's needed to justify the purchase when most of the playerbase were using controllers - and with only one analog stick on it at that.
